April It IH1 FIFTY PERSONS KIUED ON STATE HIGHWAYS DURING MONTH OF FEBRUARY Fifty people were killed and 384 injured in a total of 1106 accidents on South Carolina highways dur ing February, Chief Commissioner Claude R. McMillan of the State Highway Department reported to day. Laurens county had 3 deaths and 11 injuries. Ignoring traffic control devices such as stop signs and signals ac counted for 86 of the accidents in the state, Mr. McMillan feaid. He blamed this type of carelessness for much of the staggering toll of traf fic deaths and injuriesg. However, he pointed out, the number of deaths were five less than in Fbru- ary 1950, although there were 80 more accidents and 37 more inju ries. He expressed the hope that the concerted safety program now being conducted by the highway department will impress more peo- Hoover Advocates Abolishing R. F. C. Washington. Of the dead, two were children under 15, and ten were pedestrians. Injured pedestrians numbered 31, and injured children 10. Twenty- three drivers were killed, and 157 were injured; 16 passengers were killed while 190 were injured; and one bicyclist was killed while six were injured. There were 931 drivers who were in violation of traffic or safety reg ulations at the ime accidents took place. Besides those who did not heed traffic control devices, there were 155 reportd drinking while driving; 122 did not grant right-of- way to other vehicles; 89 were on the wrong side of the road (not in pasing); 49 made improper turns; 61 w-ere passing improperly; 94 fol lowed too closely, and 115 exceeded posted speeds.
