Thursday, January 25, 1951 / THE CLINTON CHRONICLE Pa*e Seven CONGRESS 10 GET REPORT ON EUROPE TOUR - ♦ 4 Gen. Eisenhower To Give Military Appraisal Next Week Upon His Return. Washington, Jan. 22-^Administra- tion leaders alerted congress today for a report by Gen. Dwight D. ’EU ■ senhower on the outlook for rein-j » forcing the defenses of Western Eu- rope. Senate Democratic Leader McFar land, (Ariz.) said Eisenhower is ex pected to report informally to the lawmakers Tuesday or Wednesday of next Week, following his return from a European inspection, tour in his capacity as supreme military com mander for the Atlantic Pact nations. What Eisenhower says is expected to bear compelling influence on the attitude of congress toward commit ting more United States troops to; duty east of the Atlantic. It is beginning to seem pretty sure that a majority of the 531 members of congress will support the dispatch of additional American forces abroad ^ to join the international army of the Pact Allies. The big question now appears to be how many, and under what conditions. Even Senator Taft of Ohio, the^ Republican policy leader who favors; placing America’s main dependence, on absolute control of the sea and air. conceded over the week-end that he is willing to dispatch some United States troops in Europe. He emphasized, however, that he j ■will insist on some sort of a limit, [ set by congress, on the number sent. “I don’t think anyone will know until General Eisenhower makes his report just what the limitation should be or whether it'should be made in the form of a ceiling on the number of divisions or in the form of a per centage limit on the American con tribution,” Taft told reporters. The prospective Eisenhower re port to members of congress was dis closed by Democratic leaders from Capitol Hill after a conference with President Truman this morning. House Speaker Rayburn said the! t general would not address a formal, joint session of congress, but instead probably would speak informally to .the memibers of house and senate in the auditorium of the Library of Congress, at a session open to the press. The senate has agreed to vote to morrow on what to do with a pro- txjsal by Senator Wherry of Nebras ka, the Republican floor leader, to forbid sending any further United States troops to Europe until congress acts on the policy involved. The administration is going to try to shunt WBerry’s resolution to the Foreign Relations committee, where Chairman Conally (D-Tex.) would offer as a substitute a proposal to back the use of American forces to reinforce Western Europe’s defenses against a possible Communist on slaught. Taft said, however, that if such a measure comes before the senate wthout some limitation on the num ber of troops to be committed, he will lead a floor fight to write in such a restriction.
