What is the argument for consolidating Wofford and Columbia? Expense? Efficiency? South Carolina Methodists are not poor, so it is not a matter of means. But is it the modem idea of effi ciency? Are women so like men that they should all be taught together? I challenge it. I know many men in Columbia and. throughout South Carolina be- «ause we were at Carolina when it was an institution of few students; we knew the professors well, also; so well, in fact, that many of them were called by nicknames, such as “Spooks’* and “Parson”—and the like. At Washington and Lee the boys spoke of the professors as “Sis sy”, "Bc/je", “Daddy” etc. “Sissy" was a man of eminence in Physics, whereas “Babe” became nationally known as the technical adviser in the preparation of the Federal Reserve Act. At New York University, with its forty thousand students, I knew no body there but the janitor; though I roomed in Gould Hall on the cam pus; nor do 1 remember any pro fessor except Dean Wellington Tay lor, whom, I warmly cherisn; he stood out in his broad grasp and open-mindedness, as well as his splendid manliness. What value is a college? A man wishing to be a chemsit will be trained in the basic facts of chemis try; but the man who is trying to acquire a bit of culture, with a bit of all-round adaptability, will for-1 get most of the facts; however, if; he sits before a grand old teacher like James H. Carlisle or Gordon B. Moore he will want to be something,J somebody, in a proper sense; he will want to carry his part of the burden of the day. The great teacher is one who can set you on fire, arouse you to a re solve to do something, be somebody! After all, everyone has more ability than he uses, perhaps more than he is conscious of the stuff is in us, if we will use it! What is wrong with our young men? So far as National Military Training is concerned I think the vaunted military training is no cure for anything. On the face of it our physical requirements are either ab surd or are ridiculously interpreted. We are a nation of football and base ball people. And men who can go coon hunting are physically able to serve as soldiers; and it must be so in hundreds of thousands of cases of men who are rejected. If the American Revolution had been de pendent on perfect specimens of manhood we would today be bowing to King George. Probably twenty fiye per cent of our military work, or related work, could be efficiently Gray Funeral Home Clinton. 8. C. FUNERAL DIRECTORS ...and... SHEPPARD, President If you paid your telephone bill with leaf tobacco, residence tele phone service would cost you less today than it did in 1940. In spite of the moderate increase in telephone rates, the average charge for a month’s residence telephone service in South Carolina would now amount to only 7Vi pounds of to bacco as compared to 15 pounds in 1940. Compare telephone service also with wages and the cost of living. In the past ten years, hourly wages in manufacturing plants have more than doubled and the overall cost of liv ing has gone up about 74% while, in the same period, residence telephone rates in South Caro lina have advanced on the average only 56%. In other words the price >ou pay for tele phone service has gone up far less than the price of leaf tobacco, far less than wages and family income and far less than most commodi ties and services you buy every day. Meanwhile, the amount of telephone service available at your local service rate has increased immensely. Today throughout most of South Carolina you can call and he called from nearly three times as many local telephones as you could ten years ago. Yes, telephone service is today a bigger bar gain and a smaller item in the family budget than it ten years ago. f. 7K.
