Laurens Slayer To Die Friday In Electric Chair The Negro murderer of a 66-year- old White country storekeeper is slated to be electrocuted by the state Friday. Larry Elmore. 43. Laurens county Negro convicted in June of the mur der last fall of his country store keeper neighbor, Virgil M. Betsill, is the condemned man. Betsill, whose home was in Lau rens, often stayed at the rural store he kept a few miles from his home. He was found in bed, blasted twice by a 12gauge shotgun. A wife and grown children survive. Laurens County Sheriff C. W. Weir said robbery was the motive. He found $60 in a cache to which the Negro directed him after the arrest Elmore's wife, Weir said, lives in Washington, and they have at least one child. Elmore's electrocution will be the third at the state prison this year. Two other Negro men have died in the chair since January 1. ACrP Will Resist Any Unwarranted Price Increases New York, August 2.—The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea company, largest leading food distributor, moved against inflation today by pledging to “resist all unwarranted price rises with all our might.” The pledge was contained in one of the rare public statements issued .ijy John A. Hartford, chairman of the 91-year-old food chain, who said that A&P “will cooperate unhesi tatingly with our national govern ment in the present crisis.” “We will make every effort to hold our inventories at the lowest point conisistent with good service to our customers,” he said, “because hoard ing, whether by wholesalers, retail ers or consumers, will cause higher prices. "We will continue to maintain the lowest profit rate generally pdevail- ing in the entire retail industry. Our net profit now is less than one cent on each dollar of sales.” The current profit rate cited by Mr. Hartford was even lower than the profit of 1.15 per cent of consolidated net sales reported by the company for the fiscal year ended February, 28, 1950. In the statement, Mr. Hartford pledged A&P to continue to strive for more efficient distribution and to fight any waste of food, time or money so as to narrow the spread between wholesale and retail prices. “Wit hour boys fighting in Korea,” he said, “we believe that all citizens and all businesses, big and little, should devote themselves whole heartedly to the public interest.” CARD OF THANKS To the people of Laurens County: I wish to take this opportunity to thank you lor the splendid vote you gave me in my race for supervisor. Your efforts and kindness will al ways be remembered. Although defeated by a very small vote I have no aim, other than to abide by the will of the majority, and can assure you of my continued services as a citizen. Respectfully. —ROBERT L.
