Columbia, April 12.—The House of Representatives last week rejected several resolutions which would have paced (he way for biennial sessions of the General Assembly, to replaice the present annual sessions. The House voted down resolutions introduced last year which would have provided for the biennial levy of annual taxes and provided for biennial sessions of the General As sembly. The only one of the resolutions on which a roll call vote was taken was a resolution to provide for submitting to the voters the question of chang ing in the Constitution the word “annual” where used in reference to a session of the General Assembly to the word “biennial” and to add a 1 proviso for the calling of a special. session of the Senate and of the; (General Assembly when necessary, i The resolution was killed by a roll I call vote, with Representatives Mi-1 lam and Culbertson of Laurens coun ty voting against the resolution and ’ Representative Wasson voting for the resolution. ~ — THE CLINTON CHRONICLE Page Five Farms & . Folks far we had come. For after all, “problems are but opportunities,” as that grand old (and not so old at [ that) Texan, H. H. Williamson said at the Soirth-side meeting at Biloxi in It suited them just as well as butter, and at half the price, despite taxes. Eventually there were enough of that sort of people all over the country making their voice heard that con- effective July 1. The housewives of Ohio got their legislature to call a referendum on margarine tax repeal and it carried overwhelmingly, de spite that being the third dairy state. So, now dairy products can go to their best uses, while the outter needs of the nation will be increasingly and more economically filled from anoth er abundant and cheaper % source. Progress eventually prevails. By J. M. ELEAZER, Clemson College Extension Infor mation Specialist They Can Come Back On farm tours during the past win ter crowds of farmers saw fat cattle on fine grazing in all sections. m Some of this fine grazing was on acres once badly eroded under cot ton and other row crops. But now those areas are tied down safe'y with sod. And a new agriculture is bud ding there, an animal agriculture. We once dreamed of this." Now we see it rather frequently as we go about. One lellow viewing it said, “Yes, but we have so much like that yon der,” pointing to an old straw field that was long ago “turned out.” He was right. But he forgot how 1 STORE FURS NOW! Yes, our old red hills and worn-out lowlands can bte made to live again. “Greatest Food Crop” “The sweet potato is the greatest single food crop that has ever been produced.” So said Dr. Julian Miller, the not ed South Carolinian, who is the famous plant breeder at Louisiana State University, in a recent letter to me. “I am considering all of the nutritional elements packed into one small item when making such a broad statement. I can remember when I was a kid and folks had to live dose and hard in the Stone Hills. As long as there were potatoes in the bank, we knew we were alL right. Families often lived long and well on sweet pota- toes^ principally. They have such a range of elements in them that they will sustain a fellow longer than any other single food I know. For many years the sweet potato was not commercialized, and little if any work was done towards im proving it. But in more recent years Dr. Miller’s great work has given us a better potato and one that will keep better. And our Edisto Experi ment Station has done a lot for it in a way of improved practices and storage methods. With the cotton being cut, the county agents tell me the acreage to sweet potatoes will increase some this year. And Tom Cole, our marketing chief, tells me that there is room for more good potatoes, but that we have too many sorry ones all ready. Those growing them for the first time this year will do well to con sult their county agent about variety and methods. For just any old po tato handled in just any way will be a disappointment when you - ' take them to the market place. But good potatoes have always sold at a profit so far. ?%L Last For 25 years I have in season and out of season, as you might recall, written about the absurdity of the multiple taxes on w'holesome and nutritious margarine. The leading nutritionists of the country have long ago declared it the full equal of but ter in every nutritional respect. And for years butter production has been going down, despite marga-. rine taxes. During the war, you re call, we couldn’t get butter aT~any’ price at times. And when we could get it, it was at a price that poor folks couldn’t eat it. But still the multiple taxes stayed on margarine. During and after the war, many families were forced to maigarine. 1 TOMORROW S WASHER —TODAYJ lx NEW 1950 AUTOMATIC WASHER MAKES ALL OTHER WASHERS OLD-FASHIONED!
