Injuries resulting from motor ve- hcile accidents last week totalled 26. Driving licenses suspended in the state during the week came to 144. We started out with a very heavy ! boll weevil carry-over, following a ; very mild winter. We knew that from the beginning and fought; ! them. Results were good, and we, just about had a good cotton crop! in the bag But. following some rath er unusual weather conditions, we had a very hot week. It did some thing to the bolls we had saved from i the weevil. And at opening time,, many of them did not open. They 1 ' rotted. The unseasonable hot week ' at midseason caused them to scald i land crack at the seams. Subsequent 1 rains made it favorable for boll rots' ; to develop. And what had looked i i like a good crop turned out to be right much of a disaster. But those same conditions that were bad for cotton were good for grass and corn. And the farmer who . had turned some of his acres to I grass and who had taken care of his j corn is able to cash in on the vari ous forms of livestock and livestock and poultry products that these abun dant feeds mean. I So there again we have a practical demonstratibn of the full meaning I of this thing we call Diversification. The all-cotton farmer will remember | 1949 as a year he'd like to forget. The man with cotton and some grass and corn, and the livestock that go with those things, will remember it : as a year in which cotton failed him. ! but his grass and corn and livestock held him up- ••Diversification’’* That word has been misunderstood ! by many We know that this is an age of specialization. In fact, a farmer has | to be a pretty good specialist with a 'thing, if he hopes to make anything out of it. And some have interpreted that to mean "stay with one thing**. I But look at our cotton this year and e what one crop can do for you. Butter, Apples To Be Donated For School Lunch Program Special to The Chronicle. Columbia, Nov. 9.—Schools in Laurens county will receive ship-1 ments of butter soon to use in con- ! nection with the school lunch pro- i gram, according to Courtenay Bate- man, director of the commodity dis- , tribution division of the South Caro lina State Department of Education. The number of eases of butter to j be alloted to each county will be based on the number of school chil dren participating in the school lunch program in the county. Laurens county will receive 82 cases of but ter. Each case contains 32-one pound prints of real creamery butter. The butter is made available to the com modity distribution division by the United States Department of Agri culture. Barnwell was asked by a local farmer what to do with a thin san dy field he had. Shelley looked the field over care fully and just couldn't see any pros pect for a profitable crop there un less the land was improved in some way. He suggested crotalana. The mart got enough seed to plant half of it. It made fair growth And since then has been farmed con tinuously. The crotalaria comes up there in the grain stubble and makes a good cover crop. And when cotton or corn go there in the rotation, it volunteers in them too, and makes a rich cover to turn in. It so happened that crotalaria was never put in the balance of that field. Otherwise, it has been handled just alike all along. Yes, seeded once, this great soil builder usually continues to come. And it hurts nothing there on the land except summer hay. It just , keeps coming up and you kill it along with grass and weeds with cultiva tion until lay-by time. Then it comes on and makes you a good soil build er after the planted crop there is I largely made. Winter hay crops can be grown all right on crotalaria land, but not sum mer ones. Lupines too are improving a lot of land .n the extreme southern part of the Jate, where they are adopted, iea.h winter. Saw one the other day down in Bamberg county that they had erec ted a neat metal-covered shed over. They are not going to let a shower ruin one of their great festivals. We always feared the shower at home. But I don’t recall but once the lad ies and all had to grab pies, and cakes, and platters of fried chicken, country ham, and the like and run in the church. • We kids showed off in two ways at the picnics in the Stone Hills. They corailed us and taught us little 1 speeches and group songs. They were ] called “Children Days”, and we showed off before the admiring and “kinnery”. And then we showed off again out there at that bountiful table at about ! one o’clock. We were used to having 'dinner at noon, and that extra hour just served to further whet our ap petites. And as soon as the blessing was asked, we waded in. As I got larger and was not too timid, I gaz ed from one end of that long table to the other. I specially liked “stickiels", a superb little concoction for which each Dutch Fork woman has her own recipe. I liked ’em all. and ate my fill mostly of “stickies”.
