Now these things are bad enough * during warm weather. But to have one on your foot when frost comes and you can't put a shoe on is anoth er thing. For you are bound to hurt; it. at times. And to bump a stone, bourse on a cold foot is agony of the i first order. Our schoolhouse was away back in, the woods from our house. I would never have made it, hobbling along! u-ng only the heel of that foot. So j they took me in the, road cart. Even A’e folks who had a buggy had one! o: these carts too. For when roads got 1 so 'bad, that a horse couldn't lug a j buggy through, we could make it for a while longer in a two-wheeled cart. I A bog-hole had developed back there in the edge of an old field on the way to the schoolhouse, and it wasn’t safe to try it in a buggy. So they were taking us to school in the cart while my foot was sore. Other wise we would have walked. . Our old Bill was a rather frac tious horse and never liked to get in 4 tight place. He would hurry through _<«jch bad looking spots. One very cold morning he bounced us something awluL as he tore through that boggy place. It was frozen hard and the bouncing caused a spring clamp to come off the hook on the shaft. That let the seat drop down on the axle and bumi> us in the frozen mud. , OX didn’t hurt my foot, fr a djf- *erent portion of my anatomy strMpk. But we got enough bruisee to murn home and missed school that day. And with that, we were able to mark the experience up as a success.
