Dr. Smith recently attended the World Council of Churches at Am sterdam, and while on the trip visit ed in England, France, Switzerland, and other places. He gave an inter esting address about the Council meeting, observations gained of the kind of world we are entering into, and pointed out some of the things the church had better do. Speaking of the. great church Council, he said that religions group gained an insight into present relig ious thinking of people of the world, and he was greatly impressed with the fellowship of good people. The church got a real insight into its task, in his opinion. The trouble with this world, Dr. Smith said, is with people. I came home, he said, feeling that civiliza tion is a fragile thing-mid we need to give our time to the considera tion of big things that will do to stand by. There are too many big things he said, to challenge our interest for us to trifle away our time with small, unimportant things. There is a new social and religious revalua- ation underway, he said. What will come out of it? Just what we bring out of it—if right. Want Ads SPECIAL NOTICE — Shipment of new cotton Maternity Dresses ^ust arrived, $8.95. Chess, Game of the Ancients Ch<ss, which is probably the most universal of all games, dates back to antiquity. Scientists have excavated pieces of terra cotta believed to have been used as chess "men” in Meso potamia over six thousand years ago. The game requires the utmost con centration and a keen and ever alert brain. Chess now is almost the uni versal name of the game, but it haa had many others throughout its long existence. Perhaps more books have been written on the subject of chess than deal with anji other game that haa been played by man. The hobby of many wealthy chess enthusiasts throughout the world has been the accumulation of volumes dealing with the subject. Birth Announcements BOLAND Mr. and Mrs. Frank M. Well over half the women reported that they made clothes at home, but only about a third of those living in cities. Farm women purchased more than twice as much yard goods for home dressmak ing as city women. Cotton fabric was used more than any other kind, and rayon or silk fabric ranked second. Relatively few women, espadally wo men in cities, bought wool material for home sewing. LAURENS J In Gold Theatre JOANNA, S. C. Morning Show*—10 A. M. Monday, Wednesday, Friday Matinee—3 P M.
