Last month there were about tour, openly confident*of a first bal-i Dewye, Sen. Robert A_ / ^ , faft of 2,500 new patents issued, some of when they meet Ju|y 12, also at Stassen led the field in Utfe number them very revolutionary. ' j lot nomination by the Democrats I of pledged and undisputed claims to It is true that many things tend | to make one pessimistic’today, espec ially the way labor leaders are acf-i ing during these critical periods. With 1 . ; all the rest of the world in ferment, i i it seems as if our labor leaders might ! forget their selfish shortsighted am bitions and unite for a stronger and better U. S. Not only are these la-; bor lea’ders curtailing production at home, but they encourage our ene mies abroad. Remember that our newspapers are read in Moscow, j Bankers and investors should also be less selfish and think more of the country’s good as a whole. Ol These 2,500 pateYits issued last month ! probably half of them cannot now be used because of lack of capital (to manufacture and sell them. As a . rule. I am in favor of governme mixing up ; with business, but certdm- i ly some inventors of good products J should-in some way be entitled to jlinancial help. Then we must not forgetnhe importanWpatents which 1 big companies buy/up to smother for fear of competition. This should be |prevented. I studv/ffafeni-^assignments, that is, patenbwhhat have been bought by 'larger companies from the inventors. is list shows what companies are progressive and are spending suffi cient Sums on research work; also are watching the patent office for new inventions which they can use. 1 am not* advising investors to buy the I stock of any , Tly-’oy-uighi’’ new out- | fit, but when selecting investments, it is well to buy stocks of companies which are leaders in research work. Among these J mention, merely as illustrations: General Electric and Westinghouse, Union Carbide and ! Carbon C., Bendix Aviation, Amer ican Cyanamid, du Pont, Standard of New Jersey, Goodrich and Good year. In scanning over these patents, J S noticed that the chemical compa nies are taking out many new ones; but all classifications are represent ed. Inventions connected with elec tronics—like -the new kitchen stoves j which will cook an entire meal in j five minutes—appear to lead. In fact I believe that the time necessary j for everything from housewoi K to education will greatly be reduced, , thus permitting more people to enjoy these important features of life. Then (there are coming most revolutionary I pharmaceutical ^products which could {easily make our grandchildren live to be 100 years of age if they have good habits. j Last Week I was at a church con vention where I heard appeals for! funds for missionary work. Now I; believe in foreign missions of the I right kind, such as the great agricul tural mission which Sam Higginbot-' tom, recent general moderator of the Presbyterian Churches iri America, 1 founded in India. He realizes that a man’s body and soul is one unit and both must be helped together. The medical and educational missions''are also doing good work. If the churches of this country are, | however, really serious in helping the poverty-stricken and disease-in- i fested millions of foreign countries, they will help such research work i as is trying to increase production in' i these foreign lands. All these pover ty-stricken countries have great un-| j developed natural resources and a | tremendous supply of availale labor, | | but they lack the capital and know-i how. I have just been told that 190,000,- 000 people are suffering from fiiar- ! iasis, which causes swelling of cer- j tain tissues: about 20,000,000 are suf fering from blindness; and 120,000,- ; 000 are suffering from schistosomias- | is, which attacks the liver and in- ] tes tines. Hookworm, which could [largely be eliminated with a proper j diet, is afflicting 500,000,000 people in the world today. All of the above troubles could be eliminated if the churches would make it their business. I believe in the United Nations and all the work that is being done for world peace, but none of it will amount to muen until we offer a fair standard of liv ing for all people of the world. Stan-! ford, (director of the Bureau„of Ad-' verti^ng of the American Newspaper Publishers Association. Newspapers are showing sharper gains in national advertising, the re- | port showed, than magazines, net-1 work radio, spot radio, outdoor post-! ers or farm journals. Magazines have been the leader in the field since 1942, but the news papers are cutting down the lead. National advertising volume in mag- azzines last year was $416,000,000 with newspapers second at $369,000,- 000. Newspapers showed the. sharp est gains and took 31 per cent of the national advertising dollar, the high est point since 1941, while magazines for the first time since 1941 showed a slight decline in their share. Newspapers’ local advertising rose $93,000,000 in 1947 to a record high of $721,000,000.
