The Alcoholics Anony- " ‘■mous program is the only program. ■ that has'shtrW'rPahy appreciable sue- ■ j cess in meeting this problem. That g it is national in scope, even world wide, is shown by the fact that there ^ are at present more than 80,000 ■ members of AA groups in every large g city in the United States and in a great many smaller ones, over 1206 * cities, and in many foreign coun- ® tries. ■ In these groups are to be found... hundreds, even thousands, of men and women who \frere given up as ® hopeless plain “drunks” many years ■ ago. Yet now many of them have S one, two, five or as , many as ten L years behind them of absolute so-,® briety. Such a program is surely B worthy of investigation by anyone H who is troubled by this disease him-'ji self or in his family and among his^; friends. « 1P The fact is, alcoholism has been ■ pmved to be a disease just as much j so as cancer or tuberculosis. The al- ^ eoholie is in reality not a sinfftl-Tnanfl — he is a sick man and he needs heipill in order to’recover. The sooner the ■ public is made to realize the fact 1 ^ that alcoholism is a disease and not L a moral lapse, the sooner will bej® their offer to help in this recovery,( program, is the belief of the speaker ■ who will lead the program here ^ Tuesday night. I® Also on the program will be lady speaker, herself a recovered al- ^ coholic — or rather an “arrested" ijl case of alcoholism — for the AA be-l« lieves that no cure is possible but B that the disease can be arrested as'P in tuberculosis, and the victim live | out a full and useful life. The Laurens county group of Alco- , Holies Anonymous was organized in ® January of this year with 11 mem- ■ bers and now has 32. The group B meets each week on Tuesday at 8:30 p.m. over SumerePs Dept, store in Laurens. It was an outgrowth of the group in Greenville, which has some _ 50 members. There are active groups'- Charleston, Greenwood, Andrews,' 1 Charleston, Greenwood, A n d r w s , 1 ! 'TREASURE OF SIERRA MADRE //- a Note Change In Afternoon Show Time Plaxico Candidate For Alderman In Ward Two I consider a public office a public trust, so I have used the same caution in handling the taxpayers’ money as I have in handling my own. As a result of this policy, and with the help of the majority of the mem bers of the House, l^aurens County now has the lowest tax levy in its history. Its bonded indebtedness has been cut in half and the county is now operating on a cash basis. This has not been done at the expense of progress, however. The county is now spending over $500 every work ing day for roads and bridges. All county employees are receiving pay on a higher schedule than any county I know of comparable size and wealth. There is much more road construction being done in Laurens County by the Highway Department than at any time in its historv. i I have waged a relentless fight for the public schools of this state and to better the condition of our underpaid school teachers, and to pro vide more money for the needy old people. I have fought just as hard to curb the power of political rings—state and Ipcal—and have thwarted the purpose of pressure groups seeking special favors at the hands of the taxpayers. I believe that the greatest antidote for Commi^nism is honesty and integrity in government. I am not unmindful of the ravings and rantings of those who would further their personal interests at the expense of the taxpayers, nor am 1 unmindful of the criticism of those who are circumscribed in their *• • activities by having certain safeguards thrown around the public treas ury. However, I believe that good government is the best politics and that a majority of the people want a senator with courage to protect their interests. # I am grateful for the honor and opportunity for service which you have given me. I appreciate your many kind expressions of commenda tion. I am again offering my services to you and ask your support on the basis of my record for the past eight years and upon the principles herein announced. If reelected it shall be my purpose to keep this office on the same high plane and to exert every effort to reflect honor on my county and her people. 1' ' ( Seniority is a great asset in the State Senate. Witness the low coun try counties largely run the State Government because they elect able men to the Senate and keep them there. This is the only way our gopd county will ever attain to the position that it merits. ' ,-v ' ♦ r ' • ■ . ■ ' /, . , Cordially yours, R. L.
