In almosre^very community in the civilized world a choir will sing part or all of the oratorio during the Yuletide. People in places too remote to hjeast a sufficiently skilled choir or Soloists will hear "The Messiah's" message by radio. The famous oratorio was written by George Frederick Handel in Lon- ddn between August 22 and Septem ber 14. 1741. The first presentation Thursday, December 25,1947 p was in Fishamble Street Music hall, Dublin, on April 13, 1742, under direction of the composer. Ladies were requested to “refrain from wearing hoops” and gentle men to "leave their swords at home," in order that a capacity audience might swell the proceeds to relieve needy children and the inmates of debtors’ prisons. "The Messiah" was given its English premiere before the court at Covent Garden in March, 1743. George II was so overpowered "by the grandeur o^ the music portray, ing the King of Kings that he sprang to his feet in reverent acclaim at the opening bars of the Hallelujah chorus, an action w’hich led to the modem custom. Holly Now Grown In Many Parts of Land Grown on the hillsides of the coastal States from Maine to Texas and up the Mississippi valley to Missouri, holly is a pretty but slow- growing plant. 1 Leaves are evergreen, the mar gins of which are provided with rather widely separated spines. Weak and close-grained, the wood is exceptionally white, making it highly desirable in the manufacture of woodetiware, cabinets an<j inte rior finishing. As a result of scientific discover ies holly cuttings will take root quickly when they are treated with hormonelike substances. Christmas holly has been converted into potted plants. These plants can be set out as a permanent ornament for land scapes. The chemicals are applied to plantings of fresh cuttings kept moist, cool and well shaded * % We are told that the fir tree goes back to Eve, but it was not until the time of Martin Lu ther that the ever green was used a» an indoor decora tion in celebration of Christmas. It is said that Lu ther one Christmas Eve wandered through the woods and became enam oured with the won der of the night. He cut a small snow-laden fir tree, and set it ap tn his home for his children. He il- huninated it with candles to rep resent the stars It was not until 1004 that, in Strass- burg, the first Christmas tree ap peared in literature. Santa Claus is the American ver axon of St. Nicholas, the beard ed Saint of Europe who, on Christ mas Eve, carried a basket of gifts for feood children, and a bunch oi birch rods for the naughty cues. Stl Nicholas was transformed into Santa Claus by the Dutch settlers in Nev# Amsterdam, and he be came the fat, jolly, rosy-cheeked old fleliow he is today.
