County Arent Fenners Believe in Poisonlnf Boll Weevils Farmers using boll weevil pois on material approved, or in the pro cess of experimental tests, find re sults in dollars and cents in cot- iton production. Definite boll weevil infestation | checks were made during the weev- J il • period and results are gratifying. A few statements made by farmers are quoted below with reference to ; their results in using BHC-DDT ; (Benzene Hexachloride . and DDT), i B. R. T. To^d, Bark^dale^ i com munity, applied three applications of four pounds each of a mixture of BHC and DDT per acre, five to seven days apart, using a horse-drawn duster, has this to say: “On about 15 acres I used calcium arsenate with only three applications. On those 15 acres I made about 50 per cent of-a normal crop. On about 50 acres, I used the BHC, three applications, and made 80 per cent crop. Some 20 acres not poisoned except with 1-1-1 mixture, three applications, I made about 40 per cent crop. I am satis fied from actual experience that BHC properly applied under right weather conditions will control weevil. I find also that HRC controls plant lice.” Robert M. Cain, Trniity-Ridge community, says “BHC, although ap plied late, saved my crop. I like the quick action of the poison.” Mr. Cain applied six pounds per acre, five to seven days apart, using a hand- duster. * Thomasonr Brothers, al$o of Trin ity-Ridge community, applied three applications of BHC at the rate of I about eight pounds per acre, five to j seven days apart, and says, “I made I three applications of BHC to part of my cotton crop and like it well enough to use it again next year.” Also R. M. George of the same com munity, has this to say, “I kept the weevil under control With BHC; but did not rid the field of weevils. Found dust very irritable using hand dust er. I observed that BHC killed plartt lice.” Mr. George made five applica tions, using ten pounds of dust per acre, five to seven days apart, using tractor duster in applying the dust. Another. farmer of the same com munity, J. W. Tinsley, used the same kind of dust, applying three applica tions at the rate of seven pounds per acre, five to seven days apart, apply- i ing it with a horse-drawn duster. He says, “BHC gave good results where applied efficiently. Where poor dusting job done, did not get good results. Fifty per cent more cot ton where dusting was efficiently applied.” Sow Wheat Farmers have been delayed in seeding fall grain due to rain. Al though late, but for those who have not sown wheat, would recommend seeding this month. Spring seeding, as a rule, does not pay. In seeding oats, vjould recommend that they be drilled, as oats are easier to winter-kill. Oats may be seeded next spring in case the desired acre age is not planted this fall. Freezing during germination endangers get ting 4 stand. Drilling will aid in pre- ventmg this damage; in fact, this late wheat would do better if drilled. Recommend applying 400 to 600 pounds of fertilizer per acre at planting time. Fertiliiexr Scarce Indication is that mixed fertilizer as well as nitrogen as a top-dressing will be scarce for 1948. Farmers should look into this matter early. Transportation and labor problems may cause some farmers to not get fertilizer on time if put off until planting season next spring. H. i Cornelson of this city, is a reserve' tackile on the MoCallie school foot ball team, which will be host to Au gusta Military academy of Fort De fiance, Va., in the inaugural Orchid bowl game at Chattanooga, Tenn., next Saturday afternoon. George, who is a junior, has another year of eligibility, and is counted on by the coaches for regular service next year. He follows in the footsteps of his father, who was a tackle at Mc- Callie.
