Anfhony was oto*a speaking tour across the **■ United States. She was trying to convince people that women should be allowed to vote. Seems queer today, but at that time it was a tremendous issue. She found that one of the places listed on her schedule wai Cheyenne, Wyoming. She had never been in Wyoming, knew little or nothing about Chey enne. She was tired and it did not seem worth while to make a speech there. She was about to wire ahead and tell them that she wouftl be un able to speak, when a motto came to her. It was her own motto, but it was a hard one always to follow. It was: “Always do your best." So instead of wiring on ahead, she got off at Cheyenne and went to the i hall where she was to speak. When she looked the crowd over she was discouraged; for it was _ ... composed chiefly of cowboys and prospectors and “floaters”—people who didn’t want their names known, or anything about thepi. She thought: "I’ll spare myself. There’s nobody of conse quence here. I'll just slide through my speech.” Then she remembered her motto and did her very best, After the speech was over, some of the men came up and talked to her and she talked to them earnestly and sincerely. Then she left. After she was gone she asked herself, “Was it worth it?” A few months afterward she got an astounding telegram. It said: “The territory of Wyoming, through its legislators, has voted to extend to the women of the territory the right to vote.” That was one of the most astonishing telegrams she ever received. For Wyoming thus became the first territory, or state, in the whole world to extend full suffrage to women. She got into correspondence with a “worker” in Cheyenne and found that the speech she had ipade that night, when she did not feel like speaking at all. was the thing that turned the tide. • • She made a great many speeches and it took a long time for all the states to adopt votes for women. In fact, she cru saded for the rights’of women for 58 years. This was the longest and most persistent campaign ever carried out on a political matter by man or woman. N i ' * . During all this time—during all these countless'speeches— she always had one bright and '•* 'no^to: “Always do your best.” =5= / 'L •' , ‘ . f Thursdoy, July 17. 1947 CHURCH GROUPS MEET A joint meeting of the Auxiliary and Circles of the First Presbyte rian church will be held on Monday evening, July 21, at 8 o^clock.
