Birthday Party Mrs. Carl Heaton entertained a number of girls and boys with a party on Saturday honoring her son and daughter, Carl and Janette, who were celebrating their birthdays. Carl, Jr., was 15 years old and Jan ette was 12. After several games were played the hostess served re freshments.. Missionary Society Meets The Woman’s missionary society of Bailey Memorial church held their June meeting at the home of Mrs. M. C. Stewart Monday evening. The meeting opened with the group singing ’Til Go Where You Want Me To Go.” Mrs. Stewart led in prayer. • The theme of the program was “Personal Work in Soul Winning.” Mrs. D. C. Gregory gave the Bible study. The character used being Philip. The mission study was “The Hand of God in the Sudan.” After a business session the host ess served refreshments, assisted by Mrs. E. M. Please define the two theo ries — Pre-Millennial and Post-Mil lennial — of the Second Coming of Christ.—B. W. 48. A. The word “Millennium” is a Latin word meaning one thousand years. “Millennjal” and “Millenari- an” are adjectives derives from it. Other words are derived from these. As background read what Christ says in His Prophetic Discourse, Matt. 24:30 through 25:46. Then Paul in I Cor. 15:51-58, and I Thes. 4:13— 5:11. Then John in Rev. 20:1-7. This is after the Battle of Armageddon in Chap. 19. This is, therefore, the last or seventh thousand years - oj human history prior to the General Judgment, Rev. 20:11-15. Formerly students of the Bible were divided into Pre-Millennialists and Post-MU- lennialists. The Pre’s (pre, before) holding that Christ is coming back with His resurrected and raptured Saints to reign bodily and visibly over the earth for 1,000 years. The Post’s, on the other hand, holding that we’ll gradually merge into the Millennium of righteousness, peace and prosperity and that Christ wili come at the end (post, after), at the General Judgment. For yourself note carefully every word as you read above passages. Most of those nowa days who oppose Pre-Millennialism are either A-Millennialists, denying that there will be a Millennium (the A meaning not); or they say they are Pro-Miflennialists <(Pro means for), that is for it if it is to come Millennial agnostics, in other words Even an atheist can be that. Yet a large percentage of preachers so class themselves! 49. Q. What is meant by “Day ol the Lord,” referred td in different parti of the Bible?—M. E. W. 49. A. One of the most profitable methods of Bible study is the Topi cal Method. This is an excellent Topic for such study. Start almost anywhere in the Old Testament Pro phets and follow out a chain of ref erences from your reference column, using Scofield’s notes, if you have a Scofield. Joel, the Foreward of Pro phecy, mentions “Day of the LORD (Jehovah) five times. The Key to Zephaniah is “The Day of Jehovah.” Start with either of these books. You will find “A Day . .. ", “The Day.. and “The great and terrible Day...” There is a difference. The general idea is a time of adversity, disaster, judgment. Most people think of God as One of infinite mercy, compassion and love, and He is, but He is also a God of infinite righteousness, jus tice and vengeance. This favorite phrase of the Old Testament proph ets is B not used in the New Testament except in quotations and in Rev. 1:10 and perhaps II Peter 3:10. The Day of the Lord Jesus has to do with His Second Coming as I Cor. 5:5, II Cor. 1:14, etc. The great and ter rible Day of Jehovah (LORD) hasn’t come yet, apparently. Most people think “Lord’s day” in Rev. 1:10 means Sunday, but John undoubt edly means that he yas projected or carried forward, temporally to the “great and terrible Day of Je hovah” of the old prophets. 50. Q. 1) Did the Twelve have wives and families? 2) If so, what was the economic status of their families that these men could leave immediately when called into ser vice?—E. McK. 50. A. 1) The Bible in both Old Testament and New Testament makes little effort to gratify our in tellectual or literary curiosity. A long list of such matters could be given. This is an argument for the Divine authorship of the Aible. Mere hu man writers would have filled in these gaps, as seen in the legends, traditions and apocryphal writings. One of the early Church Fathers, Eusebius, I believe, tells us there were 2,000 New Testament apocry pha produced, most of which per ished, all except a dozen or so. We can’t be sure of the authenticity of these legends, traditions and apoc ryphal stories. We should so love to know of the work of eight of the original apostles besides Peter and John of whom we know but little, and James, John’s brother, who was early beheaded, Acts 12. Of the five deacons besides Stephen and Philip. Of Apollos. Above all, of the early years of Jesus from babyhood to twelve when He became a Ben- Torah, and especially the eighteen years of silence from 12 to 30 when he entered on His Ministry. The question asked belongs here. We know that Peter was married be cause Jesus healed his mother-in- law on that notable Sabbath in Ca pernaum, Mark 1:30, 31. Presumab ly John had a family, as Jesus com mitted His mother to John’s care, John 19:26, 27. As to the rest we know nothing certain. It was an al most universal custom for the Jews and Israelites to marry young. 2) Those that were married no doubt made suitable provision for their families when they entered Christ’s service as Apostles. Peter and An drew, James and John lived in the same house, Mark 1:29. They with Zebedee were partners in *he fishing business and that may have had something to do with provision for their families. 51. Q. What are presumptuous sins?—M. E. W. *51. A. The expression occurs only once in the Bible, Psalm 19:13. The Hebrew word for “presumptuous” means proud, arrogant, self-assert ive, reckless. David was thinking of willful disobedience, deliberate dis regard of God’s known law. The ad verb “presumptuously” occurs six times in the Old Testament. Same general root idea. “Presumptuous” is found once in the New Testament, II Peter 2:10, applied to men. The Greek word means daring, self- willed, with in exaggerated degree of self-esteem.
