Jacobs, accom panied by Dr. Thornwell Jacobs, of Atlanta, Ga.. le‘t Sunday for a sev eral weeks’ stay in Houston, Texas, where they are visiting Dr. States Jacobs. Misses Mary Templeton, Martha Ramage and Elizabeth Nicholson, of this city, and Mies Lucyle Burns, Mrs. Ella Nance apd Roy Miller of Mountville, spent Sunday in Charles ton and visited Magnolia Gardens. Burley, and Mr. Burley, in Charlotte, N. C. Miss Jane Littlje of Rockingham, N. C., spent the week-end with her mother, Mrs. John W. Little. Major Kitt R. McMaster of Fort Bragg. N. C., spent the week-end here with Mrs. McMaster and little daughter, Ellen. Mr. and Mrs. David Trice of Fay etteville, N. C., were week-end guests of the latter’s mother, \ Mrs. Earl Workman. C. t Manning Named j Penitentiary Head Columbia, April 22.—Wyndham M. Manning, of Columbia, accepted to- > day the post of state penitentiary superintendent, effective May 1, with jbroad powers to reorganize and ad- jjninister the institution. Manning was elected by the state ! penal board to succeed Supt. A. Roy ! Ashley, of Anderson, who said he expected to receive appointmertt in two months as U. S. marshal for the western South Carolina district. Son of the late Gov. Richard I. Manning and three times an unsuc cessful gubernatorial candidate. Manning’s appointment carried the recommendation of Governor Thur mond. Thurmond said in a press state ment that “the board has granted Manning extraordinary authority to reorganize, administer and discipline the institution in all its phases. This means a new day in prison adminis tration and its vital relation to so- | ciely in South Carolina.” j Manning is a graduate of West Point, U.
