Increased Rates Essential To Good Telephone Serviee irally ai it of lie hcxusl l.v cAxl.nals .h«>„ ««zo' have s complete bre^dewn u’* customers has steadily increased. Since 1940 ex- Senses have advanced 154 per cent while revenues increased only 108 per cent. Telephone wage rates in South Carolina have been raised during the past 18 months by $1,510,000 on an annual basis. The cost of erecting telephone buildings has jumped 75 to 100 per cent, the cost • of providing telephone faeilitiea 45 to 60 per cent, and the cost of telephone materials 15 to 25 per . cent. Fact is, all our expenses have been climbing ao fast that the amount of money paid out to pro vide service is increasing faster than the amount taken in. Telephone earnings today are the lowest ■ in our history in face of a record volume of business. Southern Bell has applied to the South Carolina Public Service Commission for an increase in local , service rates to help meet this condition. Authority is also being sought for an increase of 5 Cents on • guard the full usefulness of the telephone to the state and this community. We believe you feel the cause the business and social welfare of this com munity depend on adequate telephone service.
