Todd, an intelligence officer of an infantry regiment with the Fourth Infantry division of the First Army on German soil, has been awarded the Silvei Star for gallantry in action and the Bronze Star, which is awarded for meritorious achievement. Major Todd has been in service four and a half years and has been overseas since the first of the year. .Major Todd is a son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Reed Todd of this city. Any incorporated bank or trust company can qualify in most cases 1 by asking government permission to give the public this kind of service. The treasury says this was the main reason for the new system, , which also saves the treasury and federal reserve banks n lot of work: t By making it easier for people to 1 cash their bonds, it was hoped fewer bondholders would cash them and this is why: ! Under the old, long-drawn out sys- I tern people w'ould figure they’d need money in another month. Knowing i it would take time to cash a bond, they’d turn it in. By the time the next month came around they some times found they didn’t need the bond money. But they would not turn that extra cash back into another bonc|p. With the new system, the treasury thought, people could hold their bonds up to the last minute of an ticipated need of cash. The Tax Books are now open for the collection of taxes at the office of the Town Clerk, and will remain open up to and through December 15th. A penalty of five (5%) per cent will be added on all taxes not paid by this date, and an additional ten (10%) per cent shall be added if said taxes and penalties are not paid on or before the 31st day of December, 1944. GOVERNMENT WANTS PEOPLE TO HOLD ON TO WAR BONDS ♦ Washington, Oct. 21.—The govern-j ment on ^Oct. 2 made it easier for people to cash in their war savings bonds. Since then they have cashed in more than in any comparable pe riod since the war started.
