C. / Page Scvp'’ SOLICITOR HUGH BEASLEY ANNOUNCES HIS CANDIDACY FOR RENOMINATION THIS SUMMER The Chronicle has received the fol lowing statement from Solicitor Hugh Beasley, who is now on leave of ab- j sence in the armed forces in the southwest Pacific; Having bbtaihed permission from the navy department, I am offering for renomination in the Democratic primary for solicitor of the Eighth Judicial circuit of South Carolina. I am in a forward combat area of the south Pacific and,do not expect to be able, to return home this sum mer and ask for your vote in person, My' campaign wifP be conducted by Mrs. Beasley, Mr. B. V. Chapman, i the present acting solicitor, and by ' n4y many friends throughout the cir- j '•cuit. If you are not seen individually; in my behalf, it 'will be due to con ditions being different from those in 1936 and 1940, when Mrs. # Beasley ! •or I were able to call and see you; personally. When our governor granted me a j leave of absence in February, 1943,, in order that I might voluntarily en ter the armed forces of our country, at my request, and \yith the approval of the senate, he appointed my friend, Mr. B. V. Chapman, from Newberry county, as acting solicitor for that portion of my term that I would be in the armed 'forces. I requested Mr. Chapman's appointment because he 1 had almost been elected to this office on two prior occasions, and I know him to be -fair, honest, and an able lawyer of broad experience. He serv ed in our army during the critical days of the first World war, and was honorably discharged therefrom at the conclusion in 1918. He is not as sociated in practice with any other j lawyer and belongs to no political | ring or clique. His record as acting solicitor has justified my confidenoe in him, and if re-elected, I will again ask the governor to reappoint Mr. Chapman until our country no longer requires my service. ——^ ^ j My record as your solicitor shows, that I have been fair and diligent in the performance of my duties and at ^ill times have fairly presented all j competent evidence bearing on the’; case to the judge and jury. If you j have served on one of the grand juries or petit juries^ during my term of office, yoU" already know that 1 \ ■was fair, capable and efficient. It you | did not serve, then please ask your neighbdr~who did serve. I have been 1 advised by no less than two of our 1 circuit judges that I had acquired the reputation among the circuit judges of our state of being fair to everyone concerned, having the state’s cases well prepared for trial, and handling the work of ’the court .without any unnecessary delay in a capable man-t ner. I have always remembered that! when you elected me to this office 1 that you imposed a solemn trust on | me to see that everyone was treated! fairly. Immediately before leaving for oversefis duty, I was at home for a short leave in June, 1943, and several of my friends asked me this question in various 'forms, “Hugh, why did’ you go into the navy at less pay than you received as solicitor, leaving your wife and three children and a good 1 civil law practice?” I could only an swer .that although I w'as' thirty-eight (38) years of age, I was in better physical condition than most younger] men; that I had more to fight for ) than most younger men without wives and children, and because o‘f my experience and training as a law yer and solicitor, that I felt I could best serve our country in its armed forces. When I entered the navy, I asked for, and for the past several,! months have been performing, com bat duty. I make thi> statement not] in a boastful spirit, but because there are some of us who have to do the fighting and take the risks involved; and I do not consider myself to be any better than your sons, your brothers, your husbands and sweet hearts, who are doing and will do the same thing. I am glad to have had the privilege of meeting a num ber of South Carolinians, including several from this'drcuit, on the vari ous fighting ships on which I have performed my duties. I wish to impress on you that the Japanese are a tough, ruthless and fanatical enemy, who consider it an honor to die for their emperor. But, we did not come into this fight for the privilege of dying, but for the privilege of living and to insure that those we love and care for have the right to live and that our heritage of freedom and liberty shall not be molested. The love of country. that ] we cherish is interwoven with our! homes, our friends and our people. It constitutes our sustaining strength in; this time of stress and our hope for a better life in the future when our enemies shall have been bent to their: knees. Just as soon as if is possible for me to do so, I 'Will return to civilian life among my friends of the Eighth Judicial circuit, comprised of Abbe ville, Greenwood, Laurens and New berry counties. I ask for your sup port and your vote and hope that 11 will again have the privilege of serv ing as your solicitor.
