CANNON, County Ag:ent Five Acre Cotton Contest Last fall five Laurens county farm ers turned in completed records on their five acre cotton contest, aver aging 933 pounds of seed cotton and ; 615 pounds lint per acre. Those farmers were C.. H. Burgess, Finley. J. Hermon Power, and D. E. Todd of the Barksdale community, and Ford Miller, colored, of the Mount Zion community. The county average, according to the 1939 census, was 321 pounds of lint cotton per acre. The contest will be conducted again this year. There will be a first prize of $50 and a second prize of $25 for each county in the state. In ad-’ : dition to county prizes there will be state and district prizes. Simple and practical rules are now being drawn up by a state commit tee. Those joining, the contest are re-I quired to have at least five acres of land in one body; keep a simple vec-,' ord book furnished by the extension 1 service and turn in to the county agent; plant seed direct from breeder or not over one year from breeder of approved varieties: and at least 10 farmers enter the contest in the county and complete their record.
