We cannot afford to relax our jsl forts for an instant. On the contrary, We must prepare ourselves to meet calmly and steadily the greatest strains to which' we may ever be sub jected.” Overall war production was vir tually unchanged in May over April, the WPB chief said. STATIONERY DEPARTMENT Allied Airmen Shoot Down 51 Planes In Two Days Allied Headquarters, North Africa, July 7.—American and British air-, i men destroyed 51 Axis fighter planes i in two days as they shot their, way through the most powerful forces the ! enemy *has thrown over one Mediter ranean area in several months, and battered Sicily’s ports and airfields with new pre-invasion blows, and struck seaplane bases only 15 miles from Rome. American fliers led the two-day daylight parade over Sicily by de stroying 43 planes. British fliers on reconnaissance sweeps shot down two more and Spitfire fighters from malta, escorting the American bomb ers, bagged six. The total represent ed the heaviest single blow against the German and Italian Mediterran ean air arms since the reduction of Pantelleria in mid-June. The Malta airmen escorted four American flights during the day. A joint British-American air com mand statement said that the Axis fighter opposition over Sicily was the strongest over one area since the height of the Tunisian campaign. The increase in enemy fighter strength — Flying Fortresses raiding Catania encountered 50 at one time atid shot down 18—led to speculation that the Germans had rushed rein forcements to help the junior Axis partner defend its southern outpost against the air attacks that have been in progress almost constantly since the middle of May. Combined forces of British and American planes from northwest Af- •rica and toe Middle East directed nine raids against six Sicilian areas Saturday night and by daylight Sun day and struck seaplane bases only 15 miles south of Home. The latest air victories ran to 257 the number of Axis planes destroyed in air com bat since toe fall of Pantelleria. Thir teen planes were lost for a total of 73 over the same period. Among toe airfields hit by day light were Catania, in eastern Sicily; Gerbini, near Catania; Sciacca, in toe southwest; Comiso in toe southeast; and Milo in toe northwest near the port of Trapani, Which was struck Saturday night by RAF Wellington .bam TYPEWRITERS AND ADDING MACHINES Sales and Service CLEANING A SPECIALTY Reasonable Charges KENNETH N.
