C PAGE FITE Say Pdl Tax Used To infliience Votes Washington, April 13.— Chairman Gillette, Democrat, Iowa, said today that his Ispecial senate electkms com mittee had received complaints that ‘'wholesale payments of poll taxes” were being to influence sblecr tion of delegations to national pAresi- dential nomiaating eanventienf. The senator said the sources of the complaints must remain, confidential until after the committee acted, but commented that it appeared to be a '*very fertile field" for investigation. "No one factor could be used more to influence the election than these poll tax statutes," he said. “For in stance in a state with a poll tax of $2.50, boosters for a inresidentiai can didate could go in and swing an im portant bloc of vdtes by spending $5,000.” Gillette said investigation had been asked in “all states where payment of poll taxes arc requisite for vot ing.” There are thirty-nine states which have a poll tax of some sort, but payment of the tax before voting is required in only about half this num bar, diicfly Southern and Western states. Gillette-^ said a complete inquiry into this broad field would be a huge task” and would involve a pol icy decision fw ttie cmnmittee which was directed by ^ senate to police the election of ttue. president, vice president and senators. He indicated, too, that some c<xn- plaints were of a very general na ture while the committe has taken the position that complainants ilMMild be required to make specific charges. “As a general rule we have adked that complaints be under oath and making specific charges,” Gillette said. “However, we can act upon ouf own authority and initiative.” The chairman said he would con sult other senators on the (xnnmit- tee about the “poll tax cmnplaints.” [people you know I small daughter ac|:ompanied them | Blacksburg wUh Mrs. Jeanes\ sia- home for a visit. ‘ U®** Mrs. Tribble’s mother Mrs. Miss Mend Geer was a business visitor in Atlanta Monday.
