Columbia, May 23.—Free conferee* prepared to begin work on a compro- mise appropriation bill today after the house voted to suspend work after Thursday to awant their report. Those appointed on the pivotal mon-j ey measure were Senators S. M. W’ardJ of Georgetown, Edgar A. Brown of < Bar^'ell, John M. Wise of Chester, j and Representatives Windhester Smith of Barnwell, James Hugh McFaddin of Clarendon, and J. D. Poag of Greenville. Conferees planned to meet at 10 a. m. tomorrow to organize and sAart work on their knotty jth of ironing oat differences between the (16,245,- 83S senate measure and the $12,677,- 880 total approved by the house. There was no estimate of how long it would take, but representatives j voted not to restane re^lar sessions' after Thursday, until the compromise i vraa presented for their appro\'al. The committee vrorking on the proposal states that al ready a large number of merohants have entered the canvpaign and it is hoped to complete the canva.s« within the nefrt few day*. It is pro posed under the plan to secure fully seventy-five per cent of local firms before the opening announcement is made. The Booster Campaign is being launched to stimulate retail busi ness in Clinton and to make a special tffort to enlarge the city’s trade area. It is expected to cover a three months’ period, beginning June 15 and continuing to September 15. Under the plan cash prize* will be awarded each wt*ek, with mer chants giving away coupons w'hile the .campaign lasts. On the closing date an automobile will he given away free. Chamber of C<ymmerce offienals are asking the cooperation of busi ness l^rms in this drive to increase local business. All who have not had an opportunity to sign the agreevnent will be called upon during the next few days and the list of those wnho are to participate in ,the campaign will be published at an early date.
