OCTOBER 6, 1938 CA9N0 THEATRE THE SPORTS CHATTERBOX ^ Bv TENCH OWENS MONDAY AND TUESDAY, October 10 and 11 “Cowboy From Brooklyn” Starring DK'K l»OWEIJ>. V\T O’BRIEN. I’RISt’ILLA i.ANE and DICK F6RAN. From (he play, “How- dy. Stranger." Who says (he Wild West ain’t wild any more? I’ardni'rs, it’s foimin' at j The be.st individual baokfield performance in the Clinton-Black.sburg game la.8t Thurs<lay night wa.s that of the Red Devils’ captain, Hall King. Other ' players on both teams played splendidly, but we are sure that no one who ' .saw the game will disagree with the opinion that King was the outstanding player on the field. . Clinton’s fir.st two opponents were not as strong as the opposition which the Red p<-Vils will meet later in the season and perhaps were not adequate tests of Hall’s (nor the team’s) ability. But if he continues to play daring the whole season at the rate of his first two performances, he can hardly be omitted from the line-up of any, all-state high .school selection. If the tJie mouth! Wahoo! And a hVrdful of ‘choice of players is limited to B-class schools. Hall should be a certainty to 1 When these three Brookl) n ** In-rth on the all-state team in that group. Of the six touchdowns scored in the' 38-to-O victory achieved by Coach Wilder’s Ixiys over the Blacksburg Wildcats, four were made by the hard- driving, but elusive. Hall King. He amazed both the spectators and his op ponents with a great exhibition of open-field running and long-range punt-' ing. Weighing about lb.') pounds and being powerfully built, he is exceed ingly hard to being down. Time and again, his side-stepping and* jolting .stiff-arm,aided by the Idocking of his team-mates, brought extra yardage to the Red Devils’ offense. He does most of his team’s passing an<l punting, and is a vici'ous, accurate tackier. Having played on th(‘ same team with Hall, we can honestly say that he has the making.s of a great/football f»player, with all the unbeatable spiri* and love for the game that goes with it. This i.s not to di.scredit the other players on the team nor to ignore the fact that without them Hall ior any other player) would be helpless. Hut whether or not he ratet*. all^tate hon- or.s, which, after all, aren’t so important, he will have earned a per.manenl place.in Clinton high’s athletic hall of fame.
