Modest in size but rich in ideas and ideals, the new firm was known as S. and E. H. Wilkes and Company, a name that was destined to endure through the succeeding; decades — a name that was to become the synonym for home furhiNhing;s of the hig;hest quality and best ta.ste. Samuel M. and Eug;ene H. Wilkes, natives of Laurens, founded the new store which was pledg;ed to serve the households of 1.4iuren.s and sur- roundin)^ territory* with the best at the most reitsonable fig:ures. Several times in the historic period from IHHH to 1900, when the Chicag;o World’s Fair was being: held; when the panic of 1H9.3 was a reality, and when the Spanish-American War was at its.heig:ht, the store chang:ed quarters, but never its ideals. Then in 1900 quarters were taken on the north side of the public square, where today it is continuing; to serve a larg;e and g;row- ing; clientele. Members of the third g;eneration have soUg;ht and obtained the same satisfaction that their g;randfathers did in establishing; a home. Buying; at S. M. and E. H. Wilkes and Company’s store was a daylii^ht transac tion with no mystery attached. Purchasers of the first, second and third j;enerations have always known what they might expect: The best at a reEisonable figure. ' Mr. E. H. Wilkes, one of the~pioneers of this firm, passed^on in 1923. Four years later the other original founder, Mr. S. M. Wilkes, was removed from the sphere of activity. But the firm remained in tried and true hands. Mr. T. Lane Monroe, who as a youtlij of 13 had started with the firm when it opened for business in 1888, took over the reins and perpetuated the same broad principles upon which the store had been founded. Others who have biwn identified with the firm for a number of years have been and are now upholding Mr. Monroe’s hands in this undertaking. Mr. B. L. Clardy joined the firm in 1897; Mr. E. 1). Barksdale in 1902, and Mr. L. T. Henderson in 1915. Others, too, have been with the firm for a number of years and have become firmly imbued with the Wilkes stan dard of quality and service. In 1925 the company expand^ of^nTng a storenat Clinton with Mr. E. Harry Wilkes, son of one of the orig;inaITduhders, and Mr. J. IY. Wil liams in charge. This store is today a valuable unit in the system, being identical to the parent store at Laurens in the type of service and brand of goods offered to the public. Many lines of household goods have been handled by the firm in the 50 years of business. Some brands have been handled for as long as 40 years, and many for more than 30 years. Such a record speaks well for the manufacturer who made the articles, but it speaks even more elo quently of the con’tidence that the people of I^urens and surrounding country have in the company that sold them. In appreciation of the splendid and growing business enjoyed in the last 50 years, the management of the company has arranged a Golden Anniversary Sale for the week of January 27th-February 5th at both the^ Laurens and Clinton stores. The same ideas, the same careful attention to the selection of goods, and the determination to give their customers the best for the money will prevail as in the past. The experience and the knowledge of a half century will be used in this sale to give buyers in the Laurens area such bargains as they have never before seen. No matter whether you wish a cook stove, a rocking cbair.lTdtfltitg room suite or a radio^vsomethingv^bat was undreamed of when the Wilkes Store was founded—it will pay 3^ to visit this sale. The last word in appreciation from the store hianagement, grateful for past business and looking to the future with the same confidence, will find expression in unheard of bargains. Do not fail to visit this sale at either the Laurens or Clinton store if you would equip your home with the best at the roost reasonable figure just as your fatlitt. and grandfather did. •irV Duncan Phyfe Mahogany Dining Room Suite- Adversary Price $89.00 Solid Mahogany Duncan Phyfe SofaV Colonial Tap estry Upholstering— Anniversary Price $49.75 Colonial Mahogany Bed room Suite— Anniversary Price $54.50 $1.25 Lace Curtains— Anniversary Price .... 89c EVERYTHING SPOT CASH. ’ Sale Positively Closes Saturday, February 5th WILKES & CO.
