Chief H. A. Montgomery, of the Lancaster police force, had been here since the week-end, assisting in the search. Jenkins said Smith’s fingerprints corresponded with those foumLon_an automobile which was abandoned near Columbus, N, C., last week, and which was identified as that of C. H. Stroupe of Charlotte. Stroupe’s car was taken from him at gun point by Sowell’s slayer, who threatened the Charlotte- man, his wife and two sons with death, after the Lancaster policeman had been riddled with shotgtm slugs. The gunman, accompanied by a wo man .de.scribed as red-haii^d, disap- jieafed in the car, which was unre ported until it was found near Colum-. [bus. A resident pf that community I told of driving a heavy-set man and a woman to Biltmore, a suburb of Ashe ville. Smith was serving 18 to 24 years for murder and robbery when he anil six other long-term convicts escaped 'from the .Caledonia farm. He was 'sent up fi*om Goldsboro. Three mem-' |bers of thej gang were recaptured ri*!- jatively .soon^after their escape. Three jOtheis, including Bill Payne and Jack j Borden, accused of helping Smith., in ! alleged bank robberies, remained at I large. ,;:sheriff Sessions said it was be lieved that Smith and others, perhaps- .some of the*'group of .seven arrested this morning, had participated in many small holdups and robberies in recent months between Atlanta and this coallal region. Investigators were convinced, he said, that Smith had been in ithis vicinity most of the time since July 4. — Bailey Memoria Thursday—'Baptist vs Presbyterian.
