Meantime, both houses seem very earnest in their desire ta cut costs this year. - J Relief Workers Organizing The big problem is relief. The pres sure from municipalities and states against any reduction in relief appro priations is terrific. The inclination of the economy bloc is to cut the president’s recommendation of a' bil lion and a-half down to one billion for r^ief; the “mayors’ lobby” is de manding two billion8?=Harry Hopkins, relief administrator, is sounding the warning that even the president’s bil lion and a half will not be enough, but would have to be supplemented by an additional appropriation* next year. -Wasbinirton is hearing reports that )nc' relief workers and beneficiaries are organizing for a march on the Capi- tolr to stage a demonstration and “put the heat on.” At the same time, sen ators and representatives are asking seriously why, if the business situ ation is back to the 1929 normal, which is generally true, is it neces sary to continue to maintain so many persons at government expense? The Federal Re serve board confirms the statement that industry is now ^ running above the peak of the most prosperous pe riod since the World war.
