He ehru^ed. They talked of Otto Gra- ber’s hunting alibi until the corridor buzzer sounded. “This felloar won’t intem^>t us ' long,” Colwell told the girl. “Won’t be any rough house, I guess.” He moved to the door, peered ^throufc’h the slot, and saw Somaners uth a hulking blond giant. Savvy? Send ^’em quick this number: 1124 Lawyers and Doctors building. You know right one? All right—quick!” ^As he talked he shook the contents of the waste basket, 'scrutinizing scrap after scrap of paper. At last he found an ordinary laundry slip with Chinese characters painted on it. Presently the buzzer sounded. “Sit tight,” Colwell warped. “Let’s have the deal over and no funny business. You’re getting a bargain as it is.” Gun in hand, he walked to the door and after a preview' through the' slot, opened it a Yew inches. “Thanks, Ah Wei. Here’s a buck for your trouble. Just. For the space of twenty seconds Otto was paralyzed. His fat lips twitched but gavV forth no sound. His arm around the pack age loosened then contracted wil^a crinkle of paper. His glance at Lefty Quillen made him ponder again for the dozenth time, on the strangeness of his sudden partnership.* But there was no other chance so far as he knew. Graber’s camp was not in Ew ing, and a man could search these timbered hills for weeks aimlessly without discovering what he sought. Quillen would do: he was as anxious as Colwell to confront Otto. Their glances crossed. “Remember, I get the snow! That’s on the level, ain't it?” There was an evil threat in the way he said it. “You get the snow. I want the girl —alive. They had given themselves away! Vengefully, Quillen raised his auto matic. He, too, could utilize the still burning-flare that sw'ung lower on its small parachute. He fired, * twice, three times. Foolish, of course. It seemed useless. ^ Or was it? The monoplane was only two hundred feet up. Suddenly the motor sputtered. It died and the plane rode without a sound. The white magnesium still made the field almost bright enough to read a newspaper. The motor picked up and Graber in creased his revs anxiously. It sput tered,’ choked—went completely dead. “He’s got to come down!” The words were scarcely out of Col well’s mouth before he and QuUlen rose full height with a jerk. Lefty gave an ejaculation. Dan's jaw sag ged; he was speechless. His eyes like gates followed the sharp swoop of the aircraft, nose foremost but side-sjip- ping badly. ^ There was a splintering crash. That wa.i the undeI'cari'iage and the wipg tip. Yet the monoplane, like a wound ed bird, bumped and floundered along with diminishing speed, pushed by her momentum. Another yell from Quil len—trees dooming up close before the ship—and a louder rending of metal and w'ood and fabric. Quicker of wit, Colwell was dashing for the ship be'.'ore that final catas trophe. It was a hundred yards that seemed never-endnig.
