SHINGLES: HERPES ZOSTER Shingles is the more or, Iws humor ous name given to ,what is Anything but a funny disease. The scientific name, herp^ loster, pomes ftom. two Greek words meaning; “blisters” aiid *^'girdTe,” the first from its looks, the second from its location. Ihe ^mmmon name, “shingles,” comes from the Latin, “cingulum,” a girdle. Shingles is characterized by the ap- pejiraiKe of a crop of blister-like skin disturbances, at fiint tiny raised spots^ later containing a clear fluid. They vary from a few, to a dozen, in num- V ber. DeathClaims David Downs David Downs, 60, died at his home near here late last Wednesday after noon, April 24. He had been in ill ImaltV fpr, some time, but was taken 'critically ill' about a week before^ his death. Mr. Downs had been in the lumber business in Newberry and Laurens counties for the past 12 years. Funeral services Were held from Union Baptist church, 10 miles east of Lenoir, N. C., Friday at one o’clock by Rev. P. Shaver, assjsted^f Rev. Teague of Granite Falls, N. Cv^Inter- ment followed in the church cenietery. Mr. Downs was born in Cald'Well county, N. C., on May 27, 1874, a soi^ of the late Francis Dozier and William^ Downs, a resr)iecte<l family of that community. In 1898 he married Effie Taylor, who preceded him to the grave 24 years ago. , “Mr. Downs was a man who tried to do his best in all things, uniting early ‘in life with Union Baptist church, and through his active years was always loyal to his church. , ^ ’ Mr. Downs is survived by three daughters, Miss Lita Downs and Mrs. Jobe Holianil of Clinton, and Mrs. Ralph Coggins of Greer; four sons, Lawrence, Glenn, Troy and Clarence, all of .Clinton; "two sisters, Mrs. Jane _ Pa^ne of Boone, N.
