Some one has said that the final | aim of education is to adjust the in- j dividual to his environment, not only i present«nd real, but future and ideal.! This then should be the objective of! the school, the family and the nation! in the present day problem t»f living One of the vital questions beforn' the couritr>’ has been this: Shall we spend or save? It is intei^sting to note that the depression has not had saving effect on the masses. Last year the New York Times reported a sur vey made by over a hundred corpor-! ations to know what people w:*uld do Hn the .scaling down process of our SMndard of living. Thi.s report sh; wed a werease in the buying of honie.s and clotfH^ng. Yet moving p*ictun coni en.s and tobarco companies made an im- pres.sivk gain. Millions were spent in chewing jimm, candy and cosmetic.^. It is unfortunate for children that th: figures shelved a decline of our lar* est fruit importing companies. From this survey we learn th;a , thrift i.s as mui'h a subject of educa tion as arithmetic or English. The teaching of thrift should iK'gin in childhood, not only in,terms of money,; but in the use of time, in the care and wisdom of- one’s resources, material and mental. Make the. generation ' thrift-conscious that they may carry j over into home life that only in .s<'lf-j help is the foundation of economic in- ‘ dependence. j Not long ago a Bo'^ton Post report - ^ er asked I>r. T. N. -('arver. Harvard profe.ssor of {Militical economy, is/ there any way to get rid of thes«* re-! currii’g depre ions. .And this econo- | mist feels convinced; If every one [ saved at least ten-per cent of his in come. we Would go on living in ou; ii.sual way until things picki'd up again. There is o‘»e -^ta*e in t4»e -union that • has alwav'^ represented frugality.
