This may prove to be- the long heralded achievement which will make ra^dio communication as accurate and re liable as communication by wire. SMELL Scientific research has developed the mechanical eye, the mechanical ear and the mechanical sensitiveness to touch. There are electrical and chemical devices which can discrimi- |nate between the tastes of different j substances. The only one of the'five ; senses which hasn’t ^n reproduced [in the laboratoriee is the sense of {smell. Nobody has yet invented a me- Ichanical nose. Smelling involves a very delicate I chemical operation. The nose detects I minute traces* of chemical substances [whose presence cannot be discovered by any other means.
