Two More Charges Fa«# Him. I.,auren3, Jan. 9.— Bascom Davis, alias Bass Davis, was acquitted here Friday night of a charge of murder in connection with the death of Hugh Banks Cuningham when the historic Cuningham home, Raseniont Manor, was burned in Laurens county last August 19. The jury reported at 9:30 o’clock tonight after having deliberated for five hours. Two charges are still out standing against Davis, arson and larceny. They 'will not be taken up at this term of court. ‘ fiuningham’s charred body . was found in the burned ruins of his an- ce.stral home. After lengthy investi gation, charges were issued against Davis. The trial was begun* yesterday in the .siie.ial term of criminal court for Laurens eounty held this week by Judge C. ('. Keatherstone. The case was givelPto the jury at 4:30 o’clock this afternoon. The C()Uit had directed that the jury be k«‘pt in its room until .Satur day morning if a verdict wa.s not letuined during the night. A large number (if spectators lingered'’in the eouit roiim until a late hour and heard the jury’s decision. Davis was indie ed Tue.^day for murder, ar.son and larceny, (Jeneral opinion here had been that the jury (From The Ivauren^ Advertiser) C. A. Power, who became judge of prohare, Tuesday, succeeding Judge O. (L Thompson, who voluntarily retired from public office after a tenure of more than half a century, has estab lished what is believed to be a record in office holding in the court house circles. In the space of twenty-eight years .Mr. Power has held three offices by vote of the people — eounty auditor, clerk of court and judge of probate. In addition he has served as deputy sheriff and deputy probate judge and had at different times the supervision or oversight of every other office con nected with the court house sy.stem of county government with the e.xception of county superintendent of educa tion. While serving as county auditor from Jan. 1, 1903 tq January, 1909, Mr. P(»wer took over the supervision of the treasurer’s office at the death of John IL (''opeland and prepared a new .set of hooks before a successor to Mr. (’opoeland was named. In 1912 .Mr. I’, wer was ele<-ted clerk of court and he! 1 this office for six teen yebrs. In 19!,'., up q the death of Sheriff John D. Owings, Mr. Power, by virtue of his office, had charge of the sherifrs office until Coroner R. 0. Hairston could qualify to take over he duties pending the appointment of a successor to Mr. Owings. John D. \V. Watts was named by the governor to fill the vacancy. Upon the resignation of'H. B. Hum bert as county supervisor in Novem ber,- 1918, Clerk of Court Power had '.he oversight of the office until Jan. 1, 1919, when Mr, Watts, who had jecn elected to succeed Mr. Humbert, qualified and took over the office. In 1927, when Coroner R. R, Ow ings died. Governor Richards instruct ed Clerk of Court Power to direct the magistrates of the county and to hold inquests, if occasion arose, until the vacancy was filled by-the appoint ment of John F. Bolt to the office. Mr. Power is a native of Owings station. He received his education in the public schools of his community and at Furman university. He married .Mis.s Ma-ade Hunt of Greenville, and they have six children- A. E. Power and Mrs. F, K, Peter.son of Columbia, Mi.«s Sara Power who teaches at, El- loree, William L.
