Steves of City Are Filled With Wares That TeU of His Ap- IM'oach. ^ Christmas will soon be here and with the happy event will come Santaj Claus with his loads of treasures. In preparation for this day of days, many local stores have laid in a sup- ' “ply of delightful and appropriate things that are now being daily viev^- ed in the windows by the little folks who are ail excited and wondering what Old SanU Claus will leave in their stockings. » No other Christmas symbol' has auch a hold on the youth of the world as the character of Santa Claus. As St. Nicholas or San* Nicholas he is the patron saint of the! children, a portly jovial person who haa found his way into the hearts of the little folks and is cherished loving ly by them. According to a popular myth he is supposed to sweep down from the North driving his sleigh, lad en with gifts for good children, to which is hitched reindeers. The picture of our modern Santa Claus is probably described in most picturesque fashion by Clement Clark Moore’s familiar poem: “He was dressed in fur from his head to foot. And his clothes were all tanished | with ashes and soot.” 1 Even the reindeer were name! Jn j this popular tale of Christmas Eve night: “Now Dasher! now Dancer! now Prancer and V’ixen! On Comet, on Cupid, on Donder and Blitzen!” The idea of having Santa Claus! come down the chimney may be ex-j plained by an old English custom. Iti was supposed to bring good luck to i sweep the chimnej? at that time. In France, St. Nicholas i.s called Bon- homme Noel, or Pere Noel, meaning good Noel or Father Noel. In Ger many the name is Chri.stkindlein or Kris Kringle. j Not only are. older persons se uring pretty things for the children, but the Chrratmas shopping hasTiegun in earnest, and stores are crowded with persons hurrying here and there in | order to secure first choice on pres-' enta for their families and friends. It seems probable, that the custom of | exchanging presents at Christmas time came from the desire to follow the example of the unselfishness of Christ. It is said, howev er, that the j pagans exchanged gifts at their win- ^ ter festivMils. There was a custom which may be responsible for modem, Christmas gift giving. It was known as the Priest’s box. Among the Rom ans it was customary for a priest tot puV a box on all outgoing boats, in j which money had been placed. The i box was sealed before the boat setj out to sea. When the boat returned, the box was kept until Christmas, when it was opened and the contents distributed among the po^r. loiter thej Priest’s box was known a.s the Christ mas box and those who had. not placed amything in it came forward and of fered gifts. j People sometimes think that the' true significance of Christmas day is^ overshadowed by the stress placed on . the buying of Christmas gifts.
