Waterloo 2, Bethel Grove was jollied a bit,—finally given a good "swig” of castor oil, which generally subdued the villain, and, closed the in cident happily for all concerned. A volume might be—indeed, many have been — written on abdominal pain; there is no more important symptom in the category of human gilments than this. Tt may mein a mo-st serTbus pro cess starting up; the physician knows this—the patient may not. Given a woman and a child, both suffering from pain in the same locality; the cause of distress in each may be far from similar, and demand entirely dif ferent treatment. The day of hit-or- miss medication has gone. The sufferer with abdominal pain, acute or chronic, should consult the family physician the very first thing; take no medicine whatever until be advises it. Many a life has been lost by the delay caused by trying out really strong medicines that are “purely vegelatble,” and are in the family medicine chest. Some of these contain strong portions of aloes, podo- phyllin, belladonna, and the like—that should never be taken without a cap able physician’s advice. The day of strong purgation to “stir up the liver” is a thing of the past. The medicine that literally tears through an errant digestive tract may get resuha—but may set up trouble that it will cost many dollars and anxiety to relieve. There are a few medicines that are known to be harmless; but more harm can be done by taking a chance shot Route No. 1, Bethel Grove to Ware^^^ abdominal pain from the family piedicine chest, than in any other con- j dition that I recall at this time. Phone 153 The Tax Question the Paramount Issue The future prosperity of this state is absolutely, wrap- ,ped up in the jonatter of tax reform. Such reform will do more than aViy other one thing to bring prosperity alike to our agricultural interests, the laboring classes and in dustrial plants. The interests of the whole people are linked up in the proper solution of this problem. By leaving the matter of taxing property for local pur poses only and relievir\g it from the burden of taxes for the support of the state government; and, by taxing stocks and bonds not more than one-half of 1 per cent the following Benefits Will Immediately Follow 1. Kach county may then raise its values and lower its rates, giving us lower tax rates. 2. Property in each county will only he taxable for local puriMisbs, not for state purpo.ses, and a taxpayer will know how his taxes are being spent. II. It will reduce taxes on the home, the fann, the store and the factory and will give us a more e(iual and just .system. 4. It will allay strife and, jvalousy between the sections , and do more than iWjyUiing else to promote state unity of thought and purpose. Relief to the Farmer The truly deplorable condition of agriculture in South Carolina must be evident to every one and we must real ize that our farmers must be given all the help possible. What can be done? First of ail I would relieve them of the very heavy burden of taxes they are bearing. Next, “f wDUtd organize e very cduhty and e very Town i n to use home grown foods so as to give the farmer a better local market. # Benefit* to Labor No state can go forward unless and until labor is given a fair deal. We are one of only four states which has not done justice to labor by enacting a Workmen’s Compen sation Law and I stand for the enactment of such a law. In addition I wish to state unequivocably that no state can prosper without a contented and prosperous laboring class, and this great body of our people are entitled to and will receive every encouragement from me to advance in their respective callings and spheres in life. Our industrial Dev^opment Along with agriculture we have the facilities for a great industrial development by' Which capital will be brought into our borders and the state made to, fake, on, new life in trade and manufacture. All oFthis is wrapped up in the tax problem and fait dealing. To the end of allaying strife and promoting good-will I stand for a State Department of Labor and Industries South Carolina should see to it that labor Ls protected in every branch of industry and with that end in view I advocate and stand for a well organized Department of Labor. In this connection, no class of our people would bene fit more' than labor from a good tax system because such a system would not only promote industry offering work to labor, but it would prevent the farmer from being forced into the towns and cities to compete with those now engaged in various occupations. I stand for law and order, economy and clean govern ment, and if elected I hope to gvie South Carolina a re formed system of taxation which would help to build up and carry forward the state rather than strife and pre vent progress and development.
