J., tands tlic most amazing and curious hoire in .\mciica. Here, in »olorcd cement, have been reprodu'ed in “life” size or larger, figuies and groups from the old Ger man fairy tales, to make a veritable wonder house for children to visit. The idea originated with a manu- factuier of fcocl products. He had bought an <)ld steme mill in New Jer- ■sey, and was wondering what to do with a piece of land adjoining lh^‘ mill. He w'anied to htrild somethinif ^ d(H’oiati\e, but he didn’t know what he w-unte<l. One evening in New York he at tended the Met ropblltan Opera house. The opera that night wa.s "Hansel and . Gretel.” That is a great musical com position, in which the characters and theme are taken from the famous old collection of fairy tale.s written by the Grimm Brothers two hundred years ago. A.s pnxluced at the Metropolitan, the st'enes and costume.s, designed by Joseph Urban, are in perfect accord with childhood’s conception of ogres land fairies, witches and giants. It oc curred to the visitors that here was exactly what ht* wanted. The principal scene of the opera takes place ih " thi^ "Gingerbread House.” The man from New Jersey approached the designer and asked him to build a gingerbread hpuse out at Hamburg, using an old lime-kiln for the fo'ondation and reconstructing his stage scenery in enduring stone and concrete. At first the artist de murred. but finally he agreed to do it. Urban went to work and for two years his limitless imagination and astounding creative genius have had full play .in building a dream palace such as the wildest fancies of fairy tale writers have never surpassed. It is made of poured stone, and is col ored inside and out with all the ra diance of the rainbow. Its permanent snow roof is like a cake icing six inch es thick. 'With sugar hearts, crescents. who ha.s been prepared for his de.scent. With bated breath the little ones will gather around the caldron in which the giant was brewing his din ner from the" bones of his victims whe'! Jack slew him. The fire is there and the flame colore<l walls are stud-1 ded with bones. It is tiuly a place of wonderful scenes, n complete trans-1 p(»itiiti()n into fairyland for the moth-j ei.s and children to whom it is freely (»p«*n every <lay. ^ The purpose of the "Gingerbread j House’’ is. frankly, to advertise the j particular ford products which its, originator makes.. But there is no sug-. geston of advertising about the build ing or its contents. It is something | mnv in American art and architecture, : an<l may prove to be the beginning of | a new movement in this country. D.nt;- of the princijpal complaints] which European visitors rttake ahoVt i .Xmeriea is that our buildings are tooj colorle.ss ami ti)o much alike. The main stieet of any .American town looks just like the main street of almost every other American town. Every building which departs from those standards, if it does so artisti- ally and in harmony with its sur- I .mnding.H, helps to make America more pictures«iue. And that is what ^ the “Gingerbread House" at Hamburg i.s doing. , < ► Adair Manages Birdsey Store [ V’.
