Schools, playgrounds, parks and recreation canters have been so lo cated that no child has to cross a street carrying motor traffic to get to any of them. And there are plenty of open spaces, in the midst of which dwellings have been built which house today about 600 people, where there was nothing but a farm a year ago. Some cities put them in jail-other cities should. There is every reason for such a move and no good reason against it. For the safety of the public and for the moral effect on the careless driv er, some of them shoul(^ be locked up and their right to drive a car taken away from them. There is entirely too much reckless driving ifi every city; too many people killed and injured through the care lessness of a lot of brainless persons who have no respect for life or prop erty. If a man knows he is going to jail if he recklessly disregards the ordi nary rules for human safety, that knowledge will make him more care ful. V It is a wonder there are not more accidents. However, that is not to the] credit of the man who “steps on it.” That he doesnT hit somebody is not because his aim is poor, but it is be cause the pedestrians have learned to step lively and other drivers have learned to watch their step. The only way that some drivers can be cured is to jail them for a while and then refuse to allow them the use of the streets. L^t them try walking on the sidewalks and crossings for a while. Helen Jenson, a 13-year-old girl of Council Bluffs, has just won a prize of 11,000 and the. title of national spelling champion in a contest at Washington. Newspaper men, con gressmen, women’s clubs and other bodies have been conducting spelling beesa in many cities. This is interesting and more or less important. Correct speUing Is an ac complishment which reveals a great deal of the character of the individual. Good spellers are persons who concen trate on details, who have a keen eye and a pictorial memory. Few persons who ieam chiefly by ear are good spellers. The “phonetic” method of teaching children to read, a fad which is being abandoned in many schools, is responsible for much of the atro cious spelling which makes so many girls unable to earn more than a bare wage as stenographers. Good spellers remember words as pictures. And that is as it should be. Spelling is of im portance only in connection with read ing and writing, and reading and writ- inng are a means of expression de signed to appeal to the eye only.
