' The tnFstees also appropriated the sum of $14.3,293.68 for the care of or phans and half orphans during 1929 and 42 orphanage homes and child placing agencies in the Carolinas. Thirty of these institutions are locat ed in North Carolina and they re ceived $96,112.60. The 12 South Caro lina institutions received $48,181.08. The appropriations bring tbe total sum appropriated for the care of free patients in 93 hospitals up to 32,029,- 679.95 during the five years the Duke endowment has been iti existence. Of this amount, $1,126,776.35 went to 61 hospitals North Carolina and $902,- 903.60 to 34 hospitals in South Caro lina. Forty-five orphan homes and child- placing agencies have been assisted to the extent _of $555,398.95 d'jring the past years.^ In addition to the amounts^appro priated for the maintenance of hos pitals and orphan homes during the past five years, the trustee# have ap propriated the sum or $1,648,027 to 41 hospital construction, equipment and purchase projects in the Carolinas.
