When I find myself before an a’jdi- vnee in the rescue mission this is u.s- iially my text. The crowd is made up of men and women who have lost their way. In this precious fourteenth chap ter of John the Master tells us that ALL SHOULD FARE ALIKE One of the oldest and strongest banks in Newberry, recently closed its doors and was placed in the hands He is the way onto the future life; He |o^ the comptroller of the currency as is the truth of that future life, yet He required by law. In a published state- - - ■ — 'ment from its president, the follow ing explanation of the directors’ ac- noons are spent listening to or trying to shut the door against house-to- house canvassers and itinerant ped- idlers. At this season of the year the I crop is unusually largp and the house keepers are constanty being annoyed. Canvassers and peddlers all come under the category of pest, but they can be divided between the deserving and undeserving and their wares can be divided between the; good and the bad. If there were not so many of them, one would willingly give time and money to the young men and women who, through canvassing, partially or wholly finance their next year’s schooling. And then the frauds cannot always be distinguished, from the'bona fide. Rut it is against the peddler that e • housewife directs her complaint. He is ubiquitous and excessively in sistent and is not above trickery and dishonesty. Patrons of the peddler usually in jure two in benefiting one. They take away from their home merchants, who spend their profits at home, business that is rightfully theirs, griving it to a fly-by-night stranger. He prays splendidly when called upon, and manages never to leave out anybody or any cause. He i is thankful for “the beautiful sunshine ' that is shining today,” no matter if it is close on to midnight, and not even congress is forgotten in his pleadings for mercy and blessings. The officials of the bank under exiting circumstances, did not feel that it could comply with such requirements because to do so would not be fair to the other deposit ors to whom the bank was responsible for nearly $1,000,000. The officials thought all at that time should be treated equal in all respects.” While we claim little knowledge of the banking business, we know’ the president * and directors in this case were exactly right in not acceding to Mussolini, according to the Fascist i such a demand. Uncle Joe then asked him if they had fished any while they were down there, and they told him yes, and enumerated a few instances where their luck was fine. They asked Uncle Joe if there were any fish in his com munity. Uncle Joe told them that they didn’t know what fishing meant unless they fished a short while down on Mackanack creek. There should always be the fullest security and protection for every dollar deposited in a bank, whether the amount be large or small, whether it be the big surplus of one, or the few dollars of the hard-pressed widow. All should be accorded the same treatment with an equal securi ty and safety in each instance, and no specific guarantee or preference al lowed because the deposit happens to be a large or influential one. We heartily agree with Editor Rice of The Union Times on this subject, in which he says: “It should be made an illegal act for a bank to put up any of its assets as a specific guarantee for certain preferred depositors. The big man and the small man should fare alike or the deposit should not be accepted. When the 'treasurer at Newberry county demanded more of the bank’s resourc es put up to guarantee the deposit of the county, what would be the situa tion of the small depositors? It is not staetd what amount of the bank’s re-! sources were actually pledged to safe guard the county deposit. But prob ably the cream of it; but when stren uous times came and things looked unfavorable, the treasurer asks for additional collateral. As a matter of fact, there should have been no such guarantee in the first instance. It would be a wise law that prevented a bank from making preferred deposit ors out of certain depositors and leav ing all the rest of the depositors to I couldn’t catch where Mackanack creek was, but Uncle Joe said: “There’s more fish in old Mackanack than there is in the Gulf of Mexico. I drove down there'one night last week, and one second after I had dropped in my hook, I pulled out a mud turkle that weighed several hundred and 74 pounds. Old Mackanack has climbing fish as well as gars and eels. I saw a fish up in a mulberry tree the other night pulling mulber ries and throwing them down in the water to her children. Th^ fish bite my hook in such a scramble, I’ve known them to smother each other to death many a time.” Optometrists The tourists kinder wanted to stop over a few days and fish some with Uncle Joe, but he told them that he would be on the jury for the next 2 or 3 weeks, and besides that—^the laws of his state required them to have a li cense that was at least 6 weeks old before they would be allowed to even bait a hook. After Uncle Joe had told the yankees a few more fishy facts, such as—“I’ve ketched homey heads that weighed 20 pounds, and minnows frequently are mistaken for shad in old Mackanack,” they winked at' one another, and lit out up the road.
