The bill should be killed but more than likely it will pass. One can never tell what & South Carolina legislature will do. After l>eing in session since early in January, it has been unable to find" sufficient revenue to cover the appropriation bill, to say little of the $2,000,000 deficit which stares it in the face. The past few years have been years of progress and we should all feel a personal pride in the college. With the depressed bus iness conditions of the past several years, the college has had its finan cial problems and they are still with it and pressing for solution. To liqui date its indebtedness is a difficult ! task that its new president must face, and in his efforts in this direction, the board of trustees and Presbyterians of the state should rally to him. The survey now under way by these distinguished educators from Tennes see, Florida and Georgia, will give a dear-cut insight into the college and its activities. We have been visited with few serious fires and for this we should be profoundly • grateful. Should we have had a dis astrous fire in the business section, we would have been helpless with our present inadequate and antiquated equipment. The proposition has gone before council by the local firemen to pro vide adequate fire facilities for the protection of the lives and property of the community. The public-spirit ed and faithful young men who com prise our volunteer department have not told us so, but we imagine they feel as though they are about ready to discontinue their efforts unless the city gives them equipment and a suf ficient wait i pressure with which to get results. If they feel this way, we don't Marne them. The city is gathering information . and hopes within the near future to plaie an order for a fire truck and ample pumper at Beard’s Fork creek. The city being without funds, it is contemplated to buy the equipment on long term notes for the present, but it is very probable that after a few years be able to liquidate the remainder cf this obligation. As the city proceeds to improve its fire department, council should have before, it the requirements of the Un derwriters Insurance Association and these specifications should be met in every particular with the end in view of bringing about lower insurance rates, heverai of these requirements have already been met.
