The books of the County Treasurer will be open for the collection of Tax es for the fiscal year, 1926, at the Treasurer’s offfee from October 15th to December 31, 195?6. After Decem- ber 31 one per cent will be added. After January 81, two per cent will be added, and after Feb. 28th, seven per cent will be added until the 16th day of March, 1927, when the books will be closed. All persons owning property in more than ope township are requested to call for receipts in each of the sev eral townships in which the property is located. This is important, as ad ditional cost and penalty may be at tached. All able-badied male citizens be tween the ages of twenty-one (21) and sixty (60) years of age are liable to pay a poll tax of $1.00, except old soldiers, who are exempt at fifty (50) years of age. Commutation Road Tax $1.50 in lieu of road duty. AU able- bodied men between the ages of 21 and 55 are liable to road duty except those in military service, school trus tees, school teachers, ministers, and students. Dog Tax $1.25, which must be paid not later than January 31, 1927. There were many things mentioned to giva us courage, but one of the discouraging things mentioned was increased en mity of European nations towards us. Some may say, ‘I do not care whether European nations dislike us or not. We fought their battle, defended the allies from their enemies, and lent them millions of dollars; if they can not appreciate what we have done for them, it is not our fault/ "This may all be true; but would we not be bigger if we tried to put ourselves in their place and see the whole situation from their poiht of view? I do not care to bring up an unpleasant subject, I am making an accusation against no one, but the period of reconstruction in the South will never be considered by either Southerners or Northreners as one of the glorious periods in United States history. A spirit of kindness and sym-- pathetic interest on the part of our Northern friends would have accom plished far more towards* a glorious period in the history of our country i nstead of one of shame and humilia tion . "You often hear politicians and some others crying that European na tions should be made to meet all their financial obligations to us. I am not an expert economist; I do not know whether they should or not, but I very strongly doubt it. I doubt it if either for our good or for theirs. I am quite sure that in accordance with legal con tracts European nations owe us a great deal of money and we have a legal right to collect it, but I wonder if a more generous spirit would not accomplish more for our good as well as for the good of the debtor nation; and for the advancement of humanity. “What do—a~ few billion dollars amount to the American nation in comparison with the good will of the world, active markets? The depres sion in the cotton market has cost the South over a billion dollars this year. Good-will, reasonable prosperity, and open markets would overcome a large part of this loss. It is true we have become rich as a nation, but is this prosperity going to disqualify us for sympathetic fellowship with the rest of the human family. If so, it may turn out to be a curse instead of a blessing to us. We have refused to join the league of nations, that has accomplished so much during its short existence, and laid down conditions in Christmas Play At . Training School * • ' ’ 1 * v * * The pupils of the State Training school will give a Christmas operetta on Friday evening, Dec. 24, at 7 o’clock in the auditorium of the insti tution. An appropriate and interest ing program Will be rendered: Santa Claus scenes win be numerous and in terspersed with singing and dancing. The entertainment will last only an hour, giving all who attend ample time to get home for other engage ments. Dr. B. O. Whitten and his associates extend a most cordial welcome to the friends of the institution to be present and it is hoped that local interest in the school and its work will be evi-i denced by an unsuually large attend-' ance of town friends. The play will begin promptly at 7 o’clock Friday evening. ' Pageant To Be Given Sunday A service that promises to be en joyable to all who attend is announced for next Sunday afternoon at 5 o’clock in the Thornwell Memorial church at the orphanage. It will be a Christ mas pageant entitled, "A Little Child Shall Lead Them” in which a large group of the children of the institu tion will appear. The service is an nounced at 5 o’clock instead of 4 in order to secure better lighting effects. All friends of the orphanage are cor dially invited.
