She was sure Peter loved her, but he was an extremely, shy man and It re quired no little pushing to get him np to the point. Several times Melinda thought she “had" him. She had given him every opening by referring coyly to her "own little home—if she ever had one." and to her “lonely life at present," but Peter only sat si lent at such re marks. ignoring them completely, or stupidly tell ing her that after all, many people led more lonely lives than she, ,and not to be so discontented. Melinda looked forward to the approaching Christmas serson with glee. Each one of us forms his own habits. They are not Inherited from our parents. A new-born baby has no habits but even a very young Infant quickly acquires habits. In fact, the baby in its first year is largely ruled by Instinct which It inherits and habits which It ac quires. If It early forms habits of regularity and self control, it wlU live a happy and tranquil life. If It is allowed to be governed by its whims and desires, it will be a cause of an noyance to others and of unhappiness to itself. # So It Is too much to say that a child’s whole future life may easily be determined by the habits which It Is allowed to form In the first year of life. So important Is this matter of early habits regarded by experts in child training that a special clinic on habits has been established In Boston, where parents are given advice about their children, how to correct bad habits and bow to aid them In forming good habits. Doctor Thom, the director of tlie clinic, has written a pamphlet for mothers and nurses which contains much valuable advice on child man agement and which Is regarded as so important for those Interested In the training of children that the Children's tureau of the United States govern ment has Issued it as an official buile- tin. The health, happiness and efficiency of the adult men and women, says Doctor Thom* depends to a large ex tent on the habits they form during early life. Far more than we realize, we are creatures of habit, which is after all only the tendency which we all have. In common with all animals, to repeat what we have done before, untU we do It unconsciously and in voluntarily. Our everyday acts, oar manners and our opinions are largely a matter of habit and the ease and accuracy with which we do most of the acts of life depend on whether In early life we have formed good i bod habits.
