A! v/ili h is un- precendented as to i tigth as well as some other things. A roll ca l vote was demanded each time and the mo tion killed. Though the members all want the extra remuneration, they were afraid to vote it. It would be poor politics out on the busting in the next election. What pay should a member of the legislature receive? Their remunera tion is now four hundred dollars a session regardless of its length. Is this too much or loo little? A com parison of other wages paid will give some enlightening information. For instance, the pages of the legislature, those who wait on the members, will draw more n oney for their services this session than the members them selves. Columbia, April 6.—There appears to have been “an epidemic of incen diary fires” in various parts of the state during the past week, it was stated today by Governor McLeod, in discussing the round-up of alleged firebugs in Orangeburg county by the | state constabulary working in co- i operation with county officers. Besides those fires occurring in Orangeburg, there have been confla grations and attempted burnings in | Horry and Barnwell counties, he said. In each case an investigation has been ordered by the governor, and Orange burg fire mysteries having been clear ed up. W. W. One hears lots these days about house-building but little is ever said about low rents. Sometimes a married woman makes a good wife and oftener a good hus band. All preachers are not poorly paid. Bro. Ham got thirty-three hundred for his Laurens meeting. THE CHAUTAUQUA So far as The Chronicle knows, nothing has been done thus far in re gard to the chautauqua which opens the first of May. Nobody wants to assume the leadership or take upon themselves the responsibility. The chaulaqua is recognized as a worth-while, desirable institution. It does not come in competition with the cheap vaudeville and other question able forms of entertainment. It gives the people clean, wholesome, helpful entertainment, something that we all need. If churches, educational institutions, civic organizations, and individuals are not interested in the class of enter tainment the chautauqua affords— then why try to have it? . If Clinton doesn’t want the chautau qua—it should be passed up for the future. A New York woman poisoned two husbands. She ought to have known she couldn’t live with two. GREAT THING FOR LAURENS The Ham-Ramsay meeting coming to a close in Laurens last Sunday, stands out as the most far-reaching and remarkable evangelistic campaign ever held in the county. From the beginning the services grew in inter est and congregations that taxed the) large auditorium were present to hear the famous evangelist. That the meeting has resulted in great good, no one can deny. During the campaign a thousand conversions were reported, thousands were reviv ed and uplifted in their Christian ex periences, and hundreds of new mem bers united with the various churches as the result of the meeting. Some of a skeptical nature, will say that these results come through senti ment and are only temporary. It need not be expected that all who made professions will measure up to the requirements of the Christian life any more so than that all members who become affiliated with our churches through the usual process, measure up to the standards and perfectly dis charge their Christian duties. But if a small percentage of those whp have taken the stand are permanent, cer tainly the effort is worth-while. It takes such campaigns as these, something out of the ordinary, to reach the class of people that are needed to' be reached, especially the men. The Ham meeting will be a blessing to Laurens. Such an experience is. needed in Clinton. There is a fine field here for it. Times have changed. The horses used Jo climb the trees when they saw an automobile. The governor made it clear that he j intends to prosecute vigorously in vestigations of all cases that occur, pointing out that the penalty for in cendiarism in South Carolina is severe. That for arson—the burning of a dwelling or an apartment structure— is punishable by death in this state. Fear is expressed as to what the country is coming to, but many don’t care so long as it is going some- where. In spite of all these complaints we hear about insomnia, a great many people are still able to sleep soundly in church. The Bible says that a fool and his money are soon parted, which is another way of saying business is good for the. bootleggers. Some people remember everything under the sun except to pay their bills, u < — The country will soon be flooded with graduates seeking positions. The business world will welcome those Religious organizations, convinced that public schools should include re ligious training in the daily routine, demand that the Ten (JoYnmandmerits be read to the children at least once a week. Wouldn’t the “Sermon on the Mount” be better reading for chil dren? In a general way every child of ten knows of the Ten Command ments, 'nr as many as a child should understand. Two or three of the Command ments are unfortunately not necessary to the child up to fifteen. who are willing to work. There are all kinds of folks that rub one wrong, but deliver us above all others from the gossip peddlers. There are not many thinkers in the world as compared to the head-line readers and jazz-dancers. The chautauqua will soon be here, giving to those who desire such, a week of wholesome and helpful enter tainment. South Carolina people are a patient people. Think how long the legisla ture has been in session. Speaking of a Clinton gentleman yesterday, a friend said “he had known him intimately twenty years and never heard him use an oath or slang in his life.” A beautiful tri bute to pay any man. EASTER “He is not hgre, but is risen.” Uttered from an empty tomb, this declaration contains the answer to the query that has echoed down the ages: “If a man die, shall he live again?” Men have speculated upon immor tality as far bqck as their thoughts have been recorded. Instinctively, they have felt that beyond this world, there should be, there must be, anoth er. In the story of the Resurrection they find the great basis for their hope, and the proof of their belief. As the day symbolic of new life, Every now and then you run across a good financier. A crazy man sent to the New York asylum on a mur der charge, had $25,000 at the time. He has made it grow during his con finement to $250,000. EASTER MUSIC NEXT SUNDAY Why not leave religion to religious teachers, and public school education to public school teachers, and keep the two separate, which has been the American plan thus far. A man, just dead, was at one time a clergyman in the Protestant Episco pal church. Later he belonged to the Greek Orthodox church, and when he died he was one of,the Gray Friars in a Roman Catholic monastery. You admire such earnest seeking after truth and wonder what this man of three religions learned about reli gion when he passed over to the other, world. Did he find that only one religion is officially recognized above, or is one better than the others, or does it all depend on how you act toward your fellow man, the Creator of the Uni verse not being so much interested in what you think about Him? Definite answers would be interesting. President Coolidge says the states should help the national government to enforce the dry law. So they should, out of respect for constitu tion and law. But while the necessary seventy- five per cent of the states ratified the Constitutional Amendment, nearly one hundred per cent violate ilj and their juries sympathize with the viola tors. Choir of First Presbyterian Church To Render Special Cantata At Evening Service. The evening services of Easter Sun day will be given over at the First Presbyterian church to a special musi cal program. The choir will have full charge of the program and a very at tractive Easter cantata, “Messiah Vic torious,” will be presented. The cantata includes a number of varying types of anthems, some diffi cult and some simple, but all possess ing a beautiful melody. There will he very , few solos and duets. The pro gram consists largely of choruses with a few aolos, trios, etc., and a special number by the choir’s male quartet. The question for the President and the nation is this: HOW CAN THE USE OF WHISKEY BE STAMPED OUT? What is to be done to stop drunkenness and open' drinking of bootleg whiskey among school chil dren? Prohibition seems to have put millions in this nation on a whiskey drinking basis. What can be done about that?
