Western Newspaper Union.) WHAT WOMEN TEACH. MR. STONES ENEMIES. TWO WONDERFUL LEGS. ABOUT CLOCK WATCHING. H. G. Wells worries about the American system of public school edu cation. He is much afraid that our manhood will be damaged because our school boys are educated largely by women. It is kind of Mr. Wells to worry, but he is wasting time and energy in this case. If he will look into his own book of history at one of his ancestors with the Ingiteethyigy forttfeati and heavy, jaw, he will find thatnuman S'elngs have changed. And he ought to know that they have changed, thanks to the fact that men have been educated by If you want the real truth about why I signed up to write a lot of pieces for these people, it's because I love animals. Have you ever studied that picture of the ‘Bull' care fully? . . . have you ever seen such a kind-looking animal? I thought this: — certainly no one who cares as much about dumb crea tures as they do would put out anything but the best smoking tobacco possible— so I said all right, I’ll write your stuff. Honestly, the money part of it didn’t have much to do with it. That is, not very much. Seriously, though, out where I come from, unless a male member of the population has got that ‘Bull’ Durham tag hanging from the shirt pocket, he’s liable to be arrested for in decent exposure. And, you believe me, you can’t sell those western hard-boiled eggs much and keep on sell ing them unless it’s got class. A P. S. I’m going to write some more pieces that will appear in this paper. Jesus the Source of the Disciple’s Life (v. 1). He is the true vine. Through the incarnation Jesus Identi fied Himself with humanity, and by virtue of His atoning death and resur rection it Is possible for the believer to he a partaker of His life so that be tween the disciple and his Lord there ing the brutality out of them. And Is a community of life. As the vine that’s what they need. On the lap of his mother, and at her knee, man has been changed from the troglodyte, that used to crack his neighbor’s thigh bone to get at the marrow, into our present imitation of civilization. Women can teach the schoolboy jus tice, kindness, courage, patience and concentration. What other manly characteristics does the man teach? Somebody representing the rail roads will have to do some thinking, and plan something, or our very re spectable United States railroads are going to suffer no matter how much the Government may do for them. Motor trucks are robbing the roads of short teiul freight, and the long haul goes more and more by canal wherever it cam Mr. Thom for the railroads says so. Do railroads intend to meet new conditions or just die out, like the dinosaur, when his time came and the rats gnawed his big feet? Our .salvation is eternal life because it le (he life of the eternal Son in us. 2. The Father Has in His Hands the Discipline of the Disciple (v. 1). The "Father Is the husbandman.” Just as the culture of the vine is In the hands of a husbandman so the discipline of the believer’s life is In the hands of the Father. In this disciplinary proc ess he (a) Removes the unfruitful branch (v. 2). He does not take the trouble to prune the fruitless brunch. The nominal church member, the mere pro fessor, He removes. (b) Purges the fruitful branch that It may produce more fruit (v. 2). He restrains our natural tendencies and. desires in order that the virtues of the Lord, the fruits of the Spirit, may shine forth. . 3. The instrument by which the pruning is accomplished is Jesus’ words (v. 3). The disciples already were cleansed by Christ’s words, for Judas the traitor had been cast out. If the believer’s life Is to be fruitful In character and service the pruning knife, Christ’s words, must be Intelli gently and regularly applied. II. The Conditions of Fruit Bearing (vt. 4-7). The charm that exists in good furniture is not a fleeting beauty, like the rose; but one that endures and improves with age. In selecting dining room furniture especially, it is advisable to consider beauty and qual ity more than price, because one rarely buys a second dining room suite if the original selection was properly made. The difference between furniture that will give lasting satisfaction and furniture that soon grows old, is a small one in dollars and cents, and will even cost you less just at this time, as we are offering special prices on a number of especially good suites. You will do well to see these as it means quite a saving. f A S. M. £ E. N. Willies £ Co Laurens, South Carolina 1 * The supreme object In pruning, the culture of the vine, la fruit. _ . ... 1. Further information would be wel come concerning the motives of indivi duals that oppose the President’s ap pointment of Attorney General Stone to the Supreme Bench. What disturbs those that" oppose the nomination ? How much of the opposition is due to the fact that as soon as he was ap pointed Mr. Stone proceeded to select competent lawyers, to dig into the war frauds, instead of letting the grafters rest in peace. And how much of the opposition is due to Attorney General Stone’s at titude toward the combination of har vester manufacturers and other con cerns that do not like to be disturbed?
