There are 531 votes in the elec toral college. 266 are necessary for election. If this poll correctly indi cates the way the election will go, then Coolidge will be shy some 21 votes of election and the choice will be made in Congress. * However, there are many factors to be considered. First is the fact that three states, Maine with 6 votes, j Arizona with 3, ahd Deleware with' 3, have not voted in this presidential' poll. Second is the very surprising situation shown in this poll, whereby j Ohio with 24 votes is in the La Fol-1 lette column and Oklahoma with 10 votes is in the Coqlidge column. Republican leaders believe firmly that they will carry Ohio. It is what is known as a, “Republican state.” Were La Follette not in the race there is little doubt but that Coolidge would carry it. However, La Follette Jias the support of the six strong Scripp- Howard newspapers in Ohio, so there is the possibility of the state going to the third party candidate. * In Oklahoma, Coolidge is as like ly to lose as he is to win. Oklahoma is a southern border state and usual ly goes Democratic. Every day now political lead ers and writers are openly announc ing their conviction that the election will go to Congress for settlement. The votes in this presidential poll express the sentiment of voters in the smaller cities, towns and rural districts. More than seven thousand newspapers published ’ in towns throughout the country have co-oper ated with this newspaper in takihg this poll. The Publishers Autocaster Service, in New York city, which serves this newspaper, has been the national headquarters for the poll. It has been conducted in an impartial manner. This presidential poll is particular ly interesting inasmuch as it is the only vote taken which indicates the small town and community senti ment. Both the Literary Digest and the Hearst’s newspaper polls is more representative on the big city and large town sentiment. The tabulation of the votes by states and the arrangement in the electoral column, as published be low, furnish many points for discus sion—none of which, of course, can be proved until the final official votes on November 4 have been counted. 'Davis gains on La Follette in the popular vote 'during the last two weeks of this vote, can be accounted for in the number of Southern states which sent In returns. The “Solid ^ South” is voting true to form and there seems to be no spot where the Third Party ticket cuts in to Lake Democratic votes.
