page ten THE CUNTON CHRONICLE, CLINTON, S. C. THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 18, 1924 By Arthur THE REAL NEW YEAR. WHAT IS “WELL BORN?” THE TACTFUL PRINCE. LABOR MUST SAVE ITSELF. Ken and women, young or old, with ambition left, should remember that a new year has begun. The new year of SUCCESS does not begin on January 1, in the middle of winter. It begins now, with summer ended, vacations over, schools open, every thing under way. He who begins carrying out his good resolutions and working hard now, instead of waiting until next January 1, will have a starts of four months on the others, and that’s a good start. Ten Commandments In Court House Maximo With Main Circus Flying from Greenland to Labra dor, the American fliers got back to the American mainland in five months and fourteen days after their start around the world. Children of the future will be amaz ed at this slow trip around the world. A feature of public school education in future ages will be a flying trip around the world during summer vacation. The child of twelve will know the principal mountain ranges, rivers and capitols of the world by having actually seen them. Statistics show that the month of marriage is changing from June to August, and that’s a good thing. June is the month from the romantic point of view, August from the practical poitn of view. The first baby of an August wed ding comes along in the spring with the flowers of May and can be put outdoors at once to get fresh air. In addition, the mother can nurse the baby all through the hot months of the first summer, when the right arti ficial food is hardest to find. Scientists, students of Eugenics, welfare workers and other*, includ ing the brilliant author of the “New Decalouge of Science” are much wor ried about human breeding, and in the future of the race. “The well born refuse to breed, and the ill born insist on breeding too much,” say these anxious worriers. It all depends upon what you call Well born. The fortunate child is bom of a mother that wants children and the ill born comes from a mother that does NOT waffty:hildren. “Take heed, lest ye forget,” is a command repeated over and over ip , '>euteronomy, fourth chapter, and the young people of the churches (evangelical) of Laurens county, are helping us to remember God’s com mands by having placed in the court house to the left of the judge’s bench, a marble tablet containing the ten •ommandments (in abbreviated form). Tis true Christ gave a new com mandment, but he also indorsed the “Moral Law” as given by God through Moses. In Deuteronomy, 6, we read: “And Moses said unto them: Hear, 0, Isra el, the stotutes and judgements which \ speak in your ears this day, that ye may learn them and keep them and do therp.” Some of the blessings and curtes are recorded in Deutero nomy, 28. Read them: “If thou wiU not observe to do all the words of this law that are within this book, that thou mayest fear this glorious and fearful name, the Lord thy God, then the Lord will make the plagues wonderful.” We believe that a knowledge of what God says about Sabbath desecra- tiohi stealing, murder, drunkenness, divorce and such, will help' to de crease crime and bring justice from l he courts. Read Deut. 16:19. We’ve tried to record the offerings as they were sent in to date: Thorn well Memorial C. E. Interme diate $5.00; Liberty Springs Sabbath school through Mrs. R. A. Austin $5.10; Ora Presbyterian and A. R. P. Young People through Miss Louise Hunter $3.00; A. R. P. church, Lau rens, by Mrs. J. R. Ellis $2.00; First Presbyterian Sunday School, Laurens, by Mrs. J. R. Murph $7.50; A. R. P. Y. P. C. U., Clinton, by Mrs. Robt. Jeans $3.00; First Presbyterian C. E society (senior) Clinton, by Edmund Ferguson $5.00; B. Y. P. U., Cross Hill Baptist church $1.00; B. Y. P. U., Fountain Inn Baptist church $2.00; B. Y. P. U., Waterloo, $1.00; B. X'*- U., Warrior Creek $1.00; B. Y. P. U., Chestnut Ridge $2.00; B. Y. P. U., Second Baptist, Laurens, $2.00; B. Y. P. U., First Baptist, Clinton, by Miss Maude Ellis and Mrs. Edward Long, $2.00; Methodist, Clinton, by Miss Lois Blakely $4.00. Total $45.40. Perhaps some of the other young people would like to contribute some thing, as this does not quite cover the cost. We hope to be able to pub lish in a week or two the full cost and the full amount collected. Please send contributions to either Mrs. Edward Long or Mrs. L. Ross Lynn, Clinton, S. C. Tuesday, September 30th, in Clin ton at two performances, as a spec ial feature on the Walter L. Main cir cus programme, Maximo will present an exhibition on the wire, which for daring seemingly impossible, artistic and amazing acts on a slender wire in midair, there is no equal in the world. Without balancing pole, um brella or any assistance from aay source, Maximo remains on the wire through a series of evolutions which are original, entirely different, and decidedly the most unique wire act introduced to American circus pat rons. Maximo has appeared in the prin cipal cities of the world presenting the same wonderful performance that is now being given at each perfor mance of the Walter L. Main circus He wears a diamond medal presented by the King of Siam as an award for the excellence of the entertainment before the king and members of'the royal family. He carries letters of endorsement, prizes, press comments and programmes from every civilized country in the world, confirming his modest claim of being the originator and only one to present his imper sonation of a drunken man tiying to walk a slack wire. This act alone is worth more than the price of admis sion to the circus; it can only be fully appreciated when seen; no description of the act can do it justice; there is only one Maximo and to miss seeing him is to miss one of the most re- Aiarkable performances ever present ed on the programme of any Ameri can circus. A new island of volcanic origin is reported to have been sighted between the Philippines and French Indo china. About 600 years ago it was a crime to burn coal in England. Time, evolution, gradual lifting up of the frontal angle, and public schools will take care of the human nee, if the babies get the right start. The right start begins in a mother’s affection for the father of her child. Without that, pity the child. With that, everything else cin be straight ened out. What heat is in the mak ing of steel, affection is in the crea tion of children. Farmers will be interested to know that the Argentine Republic spends $5,000,000 for 39,000 tons of galvani zed iron sheets to keep back devour ing locusts. The sheets will be given to the farmers free and they will be compelled to put them up, digging a ditch where the locusts will accumu late and be destroyed. He has tact, the keystone in the arch of success. Reporters wired from the ship that he had danced with a young St. Louis girl whom he had never met. When the news was sent back to the ship by wireless, the Prince requested an introduction to the young woman and danced with her twice. A Royal Laugh Yank: “Well, the Prince of Wales didn’t fall for any of our girls, did he?” Other One: “Strange, too! Labor is one cog in the machine of modem industry, the most important cog, although the machine doesn’t ad mit it. Labor's destiny depends on labor, not benevolent speeches in poli tical campaigns.
