Davis In Conference With Party Leaders V" ; Democratic Party Nominee Prepares To Write Address bf Acceptance. To Be Notified In Nome Town. New York, July 14.—John W. Davis, Democratic nominee for presi dent, spent today' conferring with party leaders from various states pre paratory to wrDing his address of ac ceptance, which will formally open his campaign and reveal the tactics he will follow. While the nominee has not an nounced any of his plans in detail, it was learned that the nomination cere mony would be held in Clarksburg, W. Va., his birthplace, and probably in the house where he spent his boy hood. The date is likely to be about July 28. Mr. Davis wiii finish conferences with advisers and Democratic chiefs by Friday, then will escape ,to a small and isolated island off the Maine coast to frame his rallying call for the campaign. Owen of Oklahoma, author of the federal reserve act, call ed bin the nominee Summer Hulls for Young Mothers THE MODERN PRACTICE IN “SUMMER COMPLAINT” ay to urge upon him the importance of emphasizing the Republican party’s responsibility for the recent currency deflation, which, according to Senator Owen, “broke the heart of the West.” “Their responsibility,” he said,“ was shown by the Medill-McCormick res olution of May 20, 1920, by the Re publican platform of that year, and by Mr. Harding's speech of accept ance. They declared themselves de termined to deflate the currency, and within two years loans and discounts were contracted by five and one-half billion dollars and the currency was deflated to the extent of $1,517,000,- 000. This caused the bankruptcy of over 2,000 banks and of many hun dreds of thousands of Western peo ple.” The senator conceded that the de lay in the economic reconstruction of Europe was one cause of the trouble of the American farmer, but he at tributed Europe’s plight to the “be trayal of America by the entente al lies.” “America had the right to be lieve,” he explained, “that all would carry out in good faith the good pledges made to the German peoples by the allies when they accepted Mr. Wilson’s 14 points.” Senator Owen also discussed the tariff question, emphasizing the Dem ocratic doctrines of a tariff for rev enue only, which he believes includes sufficient protection to American pro ducers. The difference between a revenue tariff and the Republican tariff, he said, was the difference be tween legitimate protection and gov ernment sponsored monoply. All farmery in Laurens county sre invited to coma to the collage, and bring a picnic dinner with them. They will be styown over the college grounds and buildings, experimental station, farm, livestock barns, creamery, etc., and arrangements will be made to show the ladies the green house and probably have a lecture on beautify ing the home grounds. Upon examination of the cotton in Laurens county I find that infesta tion is not increasing at th» present time. On account of the old weevils dying out and the new crop of wee vils not hatching yet.
