Coshocton, O.—The old semaphore railroad signal system Is doomed, ae» cording to officials of the Pennsylvania railroad In charge of the Installation here of new automatic disks which are being Installed at a local tower, one of four towers at which such bystems are being installed between Pittsburgh and Columbus. In the place of semaphore arms they are erecting signal posts along the tracks, upon each of which is mounted a huge disk, with .enses upon it. They are operated by levers—both the auto matic and mechanical systems—Just as were the semaphores. The signals of old In principle are retained—horl zontal position means stop, a 45-degree angle, caution, and a vertical |>osltlon, dear. But rows of three lights now give those signals Instead of sema phore anna. The new system provides additional protection and safety, It was claimed, through Interlocking switch and signal devices and through Absolute automatic blocking. As soon as a train passed a dear signal the horizontal row of three lights—a stop signal—Immedi ately takes the place of the vertical row of lights. The Clinton Bakery New System Used to Anchor Big Steel Towers Springfield, 111.—Construction of a 83,000-volt electric steel tower line from Keokuk, la., to Galesburg, I1L. introduces into Illinois a new system In anchoring ^eel towers for pro tection against destruction by wlm and hurricane, according to officials of the Illinois Power and Light corpora lion. “The system, they said, known as the Malone anchor, has been tried out In other states and has proven a suc cess.” A hole 5 and 8-lOths Inches in diameter Is dialed. A charge o' dynamite is lowered into the hole and exploded. The explosion tears a space 5 feet wide and 2 feet deep at the bottom of the hole. Into this larger space is poured concrete, which serves as the foundation of the steel tower. The steel 4>eams are sunk into the concrete with the result that the base of each leg of the tower Is approxl mately 5 feet wide, whereas the leg Itself Is only about 5 Inches wide. For Pedro swore himself out of first prize. Laurens, S. C., May 21.—(Special): Laurens went over the top with a whoop for South Carolina University ast Thursday night. The meeting at Community Hall had been called by Mr. Albert C. Todd as local organisation chairman for this county; and, in addition to Mr. R. G. Bell, University Y. M. C. A. Secretary, and Mr. R. M. Hope, the Alumni Secretary, there were present Messrs. John N. Wright of the class of ’69, M. L. Copeland ’84, Oscar Hun ter ’83, Samual McGowan ’89, Albert C. Todd ’01, Phil Huff ’18, F. P. Mc Gowan, Jr., ’19, H. W. Casque ’95, E. P. Minter 1900, Pant KeUy ’23, B. R. Long '23, J. H. Sullivan ’98, B. R. Law- son ’23, Kenneth Baker ’21 and R. W. Wade ’14. The committee in charge of pre liminary arrangements evidently knew man’s nature very well; for, in advance of the meeting proper, they had arranged for a supper which was really a banquet, beautifully pre pared and delightfully served by the American Legion Auxiliary under the immediate direction of Mrs. S. D. Childress. ' * So pleased were those in attend ance that three times they broke forth in song, “Alma Mater,” “Old Black Joe” and “Carolina’s Day” be ing executed in the order named. After having fesated bountifully, the Carolina men in attendance got down to business; brief addresses being made by Mr. Bell, Mr. S. Mc Gowan, Mr. Gasque, Mr. Wright, Mr Sullivan, Mr. Wade and Mr. Hope. While most of the remarks were confined to extolling the merits of Carolina, Mr. Wright reminisced so pleasingly, that the entire “student body” present was sorry when he stopped. It is a fact worthy of more than passing notice that, of all the men who were at Carolina while Mr Wright was in attendance, he knows of tut three besides himself who are still living—J. W. Barnwell o Charleston, E. R. Lowry of York anc C. R. Hemphill of Chester. . During the progress of the speak ing, it was stressed that Carolina if not trying to compete with denom inational colleges but rather to sup plement their work; that the progress being made in every field of universi ty activity is steady most grati Tying; that athletics is now squarely under faculty direction and control that the religious phase of a student’s necessary education and training if by no means overlooked or neglected; that President Melton is the ideal man for the position he occupies but that, notwithstanding all these facts, Carolina needs more—much moore—advertisement in the Pied mont section! Permanent organization was effect ed and a constitution adopted. Without any question or debate, it was decided to provide a scholarship of $100 per annum for some worthy Laurens boy who could not otherwise afford to secure an education; and all details of the ways and means to de cide on the winner of this scholarship were left to the executive committee consisting of the president, vice pres ident and the secretary and treasurer —this first scholarship established to continue throughout the entire four year’s course.
