Dec. 8.—Baptists of the state •closed their eight day drive in South Carolina for $5, r »00.000 yester^ day with a total of over $7,000,000 rd* ported. The closing hours marked a sweeping victory for the denomina tion and still many churches are to send in their figures. Dr. W. T. Derieux, state director, wired South ern headquarters last night that the $7,020,000 mark had already been passed and the work continues. The total of the drive since last Sun day was announced as $7,000,148 from headquarters last night. During yes terday additional reports from asso ciations brought In over $300,000. .Twenty-eight associations are over the top. leaving ten yet to raise their quotas. In these ten associations many churches have not been heard from arid leaders are expecting every dis trict lb gp over when reports aYe com pleted. While yesterday was the clos ing day association®! organizers and publicity directors, as well as the state organizer and publicity direc tor. are retained in their capacities until Januaiv 1, to complete all de tails of the work and to make per manent records of the work. Reports from all the associations are expected to be made during the week and these will show at least $7,500,000 directors say. Fully $500,000 has been contributed in cash during the drive and more will come in before final figures are made. Although yesterday was a rainy Sun day. much activity was manifested by canvassers throughout the state. As sociations already over the top kept, increasing (heir totals yesterday by additional figures. Beaverdam, Carolina,- Colleton, North Greenville, Pickens, Santee, Sauldam, Twelve Mile River, Wacca- maw and York associations are yet to raise their quotas. Over half of the associations are within striking dis tance of their qoqUis, however, and many churches are to be heard from. It Is estimated that out of 1,142 churches in the State 250 have made no reports, whatsoever, to headquart ers And these are expected to material ly increase the total. Governor Davis Confers with Thirty- Five Mayors and City Attorneys to Prepare Plans. • Richmond, Va., Dec. 3.—Thirty-five mayors and city attorneys met here with Gov. Westmoreland Davis today and plans were outlined to have the next legislature enact laws that will curb profiteering In food and fuel. Governor Davifc was empowered to name a committee of three which will draw up the required legislation to be presented to the state assembly when it meets in January. Governor Davis announced tonight that the appoint ments will not be made for several days. The action was taken in view of the fact that when peace is declared the Lever law will^become inactive and states will be required to look after their own food and fuel situa tion.
