The people carry iflarks of utter privation of their faces. They have no strength for quick movements. They are languid listless,-despairing. The buildings and streets are dirty It is indeed a "city of death". I visited the Vienna hospitals; the scenes there are so terrible I can novar erase them from my memory. Starring women bring their children wrapped in paper?for there are no clothes. The children have big abnormal heads and small, shriveled b:dJes. Touch them evpr so gently and they scream with agony. They are suffering from a disease of the bones, brought on by malnutMton. The maternity wards, too, present awful sights. Babies there are dying like leaves before the windshoft. The mothers have no strength to nourish them?there is no milk. Tet, the hospitals have ho surplus, no clothes. no appliances, no fuel, and often even lack hot water for operations. The use of paper bandages is general. Many hospitals are bein forced to close. The food controller told me that unless help comes by January 18, the people of Vienna will face an abyss. Food rations are now the smallest ever. The people are unable to live on them and not always able to get them. Endless food queues are seen in the streets all day. Many people are going to the country i;. the hope of getting a little food. My own sister, a resi dent ot^Vienna is living on rations.
