REDUCE ACREAGE MNETBEN THOUSAND COR 101U AGAINST 24,000 for 1018. Returns from District Chairmen Show a Decrease of Nearly 5000 Acres in this County. The District Committees on cotton: reduction held their final meeting at j the court house last Friday and the reports were very encouraging. It , is evident that Dillon couny will V make a substantial reduction in cotton* acreage this year. Pledges have not been secured from every xaruier in the 'county as it was a physical impossibility to see them all in person, but those who were visited readily consented to make a substantial reduction in their 1919 acreage. Dr. David, county chairman, has conduct-/ ed the campaign in a thorough and systematic manner and .there is every . ) reason to'believe thnt Dillon will} make a creditable shewing when the j reports for the entire state are nrade; public at today's meeting in. LUMBER MILL ASSURED Practically Certain that Big Lumber Plant Will Come 10 -liiJon. Details-were completed yesterday which makes it practically certain that the Beaufort County Lumber Company will erect its big mill in Dillon. Committees have been at work for the past several week8 assisting : the company in getting its sites anu rights-of-way and the last details were completed yesterday, j The company will erect its mill plant on the A. D. McKenzie lands, formerly known as the Moore piace, in the western suburbs. It will have a connection with both railroads, the 'siding from the Coast Line running out from the main line at a point near the Dillon Cotton hlills. j This will be one of the largest plants owned o y the Beaufort County'Lumber Co. It has other plant3 at Fairmont, Norfolk and in Maryland, while arrangements are under way to build a large plant at Fayetteville. The company has large tracts of timber in the western part of the [county and its leases cover a period of ! ten years. It is purchasing the site on which the mill will be located. The plant will employ about 200 operatives and the pay roll will .amount to something like $3000.00 iper week. The coming of the plant i means a large increase in our populai tion and it is estimated that at least 125 white families will come to Dillon [with the plant. The officers of the Beaufort Counjty Lumber Co., are men of high standling in the business world, thorough .and progressive in their methods, and every man in Dillon extends them a most cordial welcome to our town. f i o Third Case in Dillon County. A fifth report of a case of lethargic encephalitis, commonly called "sleeping sickness" ha8 been made at the office of the state health officer, the last report being sent in by Dr. N. M. Schofield of Fork. In the report, the physician says that the patient is a white boy, seven years old and that the patient began to be drowsy in the day time February 28. The drowsiness became more pronounced gradually, and the doctor firsfsaW the patient March 3 at which time the child was in a deep stupor from which he could be roused with difficulty. He would drop to sleep again after being : awakened, and steadily grew weak'er until March 5, when he could ! hardly swallow liquids, and did not I seem to awaken when taking liquid nourishment. He was less drowsy | in the morning than in tne arter[noon according to the report made. March 9th showed an improvement j in the condition of the patient, since i which time he has rapidly convalesced and by March 21 the stupor had disappeared and pppetite had returned. The case will be fully investigated by the health authorities. oCliuirh Notes.
