That was written of a member of P-. the family who struggled from un-i der the engulfing shroud of the v generic term and became for a time at least, not "one of the Smiths," but "^he Smith." However, there must be something v.. sle and strong in the very name of Smith that inspires to special effort those so labelled, says The Kansas City Star. Did you ever notice how many Smiths attain to & place a little or more than a little, above the dead level of humanity? Of course there! I are a lot of Smiths, but the family appears to acchieve prominence even out of all proportion to the numerical strength. Heredity might be given part of the credit. The very name le proof positive that somewhere hack along the ancestral line there were men so skilled in some trade! that they were set aside from the: ordinary run of workers and were known as "smiths." This ancestral legacy of industry an-d ability probably crops out at frequent intervals In the descendants. And then again, a boy who arrives at the age of understanding and realizes that his name is Smith ; may feel impelled to extra effort, [ knowing that in hard striving lies j his only hope of being singled out from the vast army of Smiths. | In this connection it is worthy iof note that there are now four Smiths in the United States Senate, or will be when the new member from Georgia qualifies. When | the clerk calls the roll at the next session and gets down to the S's it will sourd like a family re-union. "Smith of Georgia, Smith of Maryiaud. Smith of Michigan, Smith of South Carolina" is the way the call will run. With only ninetytwo places to be filled it smacks a little of hogging it for the Smiths to grab four of the niches *i me greatest oeiiDerative nociy | in the world," leaving only eightyeight places for all the rest of the j names in the directory. But the story of the rise and progress of the Smih ftamily takes it beyond the confines of the north end of the Capitol. Go over the south end and you will find five five representatives. Michigan dis-i plays a peculiar fondness for the f&milv, having sent two Smiths to the House and one to the Senate. The other three House Smiths are from New York, California and Texas. Those other old standbys, "Jones" and "Browns," have been! distanced in tbe race for honors. When the immortal "Casey," the1 brave engineer, perished on the Reno Hill the Jones family received a setback from which it has 1 not recovered. There is only one . "Y- Jones in the Senate and one in tbe house.
